Captain Beyond with former members of Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly - is not often played on classic rock stations or classic video stations! I fear this may be one of Rock n Rolls lost treasures that has been overlooked by mass media outlets!! This treasure will make you feel like you have discovered something completely new in the year 2010 and remind you what you loved about music and the powerful 70's era! Captain Beyond lives today in the future with us now as this album is timeless! Bobby Caldwell on drums brings an almost jazz influenced power rock style of playing that starts you on a journey into a groove of tongue twisting guitar and bass riffs that takes you all the way into the future with Captain Beyond! This simply put is a "must have" for any true music lover! It is with my extreme pleasure that I write this about one of rock n rolls greatest bands! - Long Live Captain Beyond!!Read full review
This is as incredible master of the group featuring an Iron Butterfly member and the original lead singer of Deep Purple with the guy who started Rhine Records. The digital clarity reminds one of the exuberance felt with the first hearing of this Capricorn Records release in 1972! I am very excited about looking for the remaster of the follow up release, and I'm sufficiently breathless...
I bought a pair of JBL Lancer 77's with walnut cabinets in 1972, which I still have. Refoamed the speaker cones several times and they still sound fantastic. Blew out and repaired the tweeters 3 times back in the mid 70's. All 3 times I was playing this album. Crank it up!

This recording by CB never gets old. I’ve never understood why it isn’t widely known and revered. And If you’re into drumming this is your R&R ticket to ride: challenging, drum-dominated tracks recorded live in the studio without repairs or edits, or so it sounds. Imagine that, if you can.

This has to be one of the best rock albums ever made. I totally forgot about Captain Beyond until I heard them again on the radio. Their use of odd time signatures is absolutely brilliant, with the opening song starting in 5/8. Some people don't read the text before writing a review, with one person stating that one of the guys was the person who started "Rhine" (Rhino?) records. Actually it is two of the men from Iron Butterfly with Larry "Rhino" Rheinhardt. Yes the LP sounds better, but I have both, the CD and the LP.
I believe that this is the original CD release which I already own and not the re-master as in the description. There is nothing on the package (no sticker on the shrink wrap and nothing printed on the insert or tray card) to indicate that it's a re-mastered edition. Having said that though, for anyone not already familiar with this classic album, it is fantastic early '70s Progressive Hard rock that opens up with a complex drum beat and features Prog Rock touches such as multiple time signatures in the same song, funky and complex drumming, and great catchy guitar riffs. Very disappointed though, that I don't have the re-master to review!
Although this version is marginally better than the original rip from vinyl, it is only just that. The engineer clutters the mid-range and upper mid-range so badly that the beautiful subtle nuances are not just lost but mashed; headroom wan't so much as an afterthought. For those familiar with this historic and truly incredible album, listening to this lack-of-effort is nearly painful. This lazy-assed engineer should never have been allowed to trash this amazing and way-ahead-of-it's-time recording. If you want the best copy possible other than vinyl, get the Japanese remaster; it is order's of magnitude far and away better than this lame effort by someone who apparently missed the point completely.
great cd great packaging

A great collection of outstanding early 70's rock by a stellar group of musicians, and an album I've been trying to find for years! I've found very, very few people who have even heard of this group, and that's a real shame! If you love prog-rock, classic rock, or just anything that rocks then do your ears a favor a get this! If you are unfamiliar with these guys then definately buy it now and be just as surprised as I was that you have never heard of this group!
Different - in a good way. A little on the progressive rock side. Band I was in did 'Raging River Of Fear' in 1975!
