  • Vintage Lugosi

One of Bela Lugosi's quality films from his early days after he became a horror star in "Dracula". The early 1930s was a fruitful period for Lugosi with stand out performances in film like this one, "White Zombie," "Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Black Cat," "The Raven" and others. He is still young, statuesque, and commanding on screen and at his best. As Chandu, he plays one of his truly evil, mad villains and is bound on obtaining a death ray device that could wipe out entire cities. His mad dream is to make himself world dictator. Lugosi totally captures Chandu's megalomania and cruelty. His performance must have had 1930s audiences squirming in their seats and it is still powerful. The plot is similar to the serials Hollywood produced at the time, many of them starring Lugosi, but is far better than them. The film's lone drawback is its casting of Edmund Lowe as Chandu, the hero of the story. Lowe simply isn't up to the part and lacks energy and charisma. Lugosi completely upstages him and dominates the film. The company that filmed a follow-up serial "The Return of Chandu" saw this and wisely cast Lugosi as Chandu in that production, which is quite good. It is redundant to say that Lugosi gives a standout performance here because he did that in all of his films, regardless of how shabby and cheap many of his poverty row films were. He always put all he had into every role and proved the old adage that there are no small parts, only small actors. The blu-ray features an excellent transfer and adds an interesting bonus feature with good commentary on the film and its stars.

  • Lots of fun and excellent picture quality.

Bela Lugosi plays the villain, Saturday matinee serial. Great informative commentary mostly on Bela lugosi. Lots of interesting traps and hijinks. Supposedly partially inspired indiana jones movies. A must have for Bela Lugosi fans.
