Well, it took some modification.
My Ryobi is a several years old. I removed the old head assembly to find the remaining shaft didn't match the new head. The drive shaft was two pieces. By removing the top/outer with two open end wrenches, one to hold the inner/base and another to turn the top/outer shaft. Turn lefty loosy and once the top is removed the NEW head threads right on. You will see a disk/thick washer still on the inner shaft, you need this to tighten the new head. Many units newer than mine there is a notch on the outside edge of the disk a small tip flat screwdriver can be used to hold the disk while you turn BY HAND the new head to tighten. Older units like mine have no notch, do I used a grinder disk for metal to make a notch. Simply remove the disk and make the notch. Don't do this freehand, use a vice to secure the part then use grinder. An 1/8 th inch square notch is just right. Reassemble and hand tighten the new head. Discontinued parts for Ryobi trimmer.
Bought a Ryobi trimmer 4 years ago and the only pieces that wear out are these two parts, but it is impossible to find them and a call to Ryobi said they were discontinued. I was left with either an expensive rebuild or buying a new trimmer. I bought 3 and as long as the battery lasts I won't have to by a new trimer for 12 years.
