One of the greatest CD's ever made, in my honest opinion. This is in great quality, and at it's price, an absolute STEAL. Maynard is at his best with this, as of course is the rest of the band, and you just can't ever go wrong with Tool! Get this immediately, you won't regret it!

When its all said and done. this is crap. Lots of strange time changes but is that really music? Demented lyrics, How many even close to normal people want to hear about prison sex? I like the heavy sounds and inventive rhythms but at what cost? Do I really have to listen to really sick demented raving of an obvious lunatic to hear great heavy guitar tones? Sometimes I like Tool. I bought the record. Its just that over time, its really just crap.

Tool: Danny Carey, Paul D'Amour, Maynard James, Adam Jones. Additional personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals). Recorded at Grand Master Studios, Hollywood, California. UNDERTOW is an example of nimble heavy metal in the angtsy/artsy tradition of Jane's Addiction. Tool favors medium tempos, which gives several of the group's songs a modern-day Black Sabbath feel, but fortunately lead singer Maynard James mostly steers clear of the usual quasi-operatic yowling favored by most metal frontmen--he's a remarkably expressive singer in a genre not usually so noted. As for the band's world-view, it's pretty much summed up in the unsentimentally named "Prison Sex": "Do unto others, what has been done to you."
this is not your typical heavy metal cd at all!this is actually more grunge than metal,"grungemetal",if you will.yeah, there's the obvious influences,(soundgarden, janes addiction, nine inch nails),maybe...BUT,they devour it all,and spit out one hell of an aural assault on your senses.THICK!,RHYTHMIC!,POUNDING!,BASS HEAVY!STRONG VOICE,(at times, haunting!)EVERY SONG IS GOOD!(hidden track is legendary).this is TOOL'S finest moment!it's hard to believe this came out 15 years ago,but not one alt-metal cd since has topped this one!IF YOU DO NOT OWN THIS ONE,do yourself a favor, buy this, put it in your discman, put the headphones on,turn it up,AND LOSE YOURSELF!!IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!!

Tool was scheduled to play the Garden Pavilion in Hollywood but learned at the last minute that the Garden Pavilion belonged to L. Ron Hubbard's Church of Scientology, which the band felt clashed with "the band's ethics about how a person should not follow a belief system that constricts their development as a human being".[2] Keenan "spent most of the show baa-ing like a sheep at the audience" Tool released their first full-length album, Undertow (1993). It expressed more diverse dynamics than Opiate and included songs the band had chosen not to publish on their previous release, when they had opted for a heavier sound.Read full review
I bought this CD back in 1993 when it came out and lost it somewhere over the years, I had to get it again because Tool won't allow their music on any music service. The the old tool still holds up very well over 20 years later. I wish I could say the same for more recent Tool albums but I can't really. If you like heavy music with actual talent and amazing vocals then check this out!
I MISSED THIS BANDS TRUE SOUNDS BACK IN 1993,I WAS BUYING OUR FIRST HOME AND STARTING A FAMILY.BUT NOW IN 2007 I PLAYED THE C.D. AGAIN IN OUR 2005 DODGE DURANGO CRANKED AS LOUD AS IT WOULD GO AND PLAYED TRACK 3 TRUE TOOL FANS CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I WENT THRU!! TRUELY AMAZZZZZINGGGGGG!!! AT 41 I NOW GET MAYNARD!! ONE OF THE BEST CD'S I OWN!!
This album is where TOOL started. Most of the songs were already made for Undertow when Opiate was made. The style of their music back then, to me had sort of a bluesy type spin on it. With obvious influences like King Crimson. The build of song structure, and the slight change with each measure, make this an interesting and great album to own!
