If you are a "reader", about half of the articles/essays in this book are classics you may have "heard of" but never got around to reading. The others are generally high quality, some written specifically for a contemporary audience, others overlooked gems shining a bright light on the human condition, such as it is. I highly recommend this reader. The excerpts from Tocqueville's " Democracy in America" are worth the price alone.

Well - it's a college textbook, used for classes like "critical thinking" It includes a balance of classic and contemporary selections from mixed genres, and provides a range of viewpoints and voices (mostly liberal, however). Dry prose, drier fonts, and no conclusions. Not something I want on my bookshelf (unless I need a 3-poundc oaster in a pinch).
i just needed the book for class... it's a book!! it works just like you would expect...it sits on your desk or in your back pack until you open it and read it, drool on it, spill coffee, sleep, throw it on the floor. jk its a very good composition of essays that encourage critical thinking..
