SynopsisExcerpt from The Complete Works of Th ophile Gautier, Vol. 7: Travels in Russia, Belgium and Holland, a Day in London The chief centres were in no wise attractive, and a trip in one of these conveyances was something to be long remembered by those who had intrusted themselves to that mode of progression. The hotels and inns were very far indeed from approaching the better modern houses of entertainment, leaving out of consideration the palatial hotels that now abound in great cities and in all popular resorts. It is true that the father of Romanticism himself, the illustrious Chateaubriand, had been a great traveller, and that he had personally visited the places in which he laid the scene of his various tales and novels.
