SynopsisD'Anne Burwell's smart, athletic son-raised in a loving and prosperous home-begins abusing OxyContin as a teenager, and within a year drops out of college, walks out of rehab, and lands homeless on the streets of Boulder. Struggling with fear, guilt, and a desperate need to protect her son, D'Anne grapples with her husband's anger and her daughter's depression as the family disease of addiction impacts them all. She discovers the terrifying links between prescription-drug abuse and skyrocketing heroin use. And she comes to understand that to save her child she must step back and allow him to fight for his own soul. SAVING JAKE gives voice to the devastation shared by the families of addicts, and provides vital hope. Above all, it is a powerful personal story of love and redemption.
Saving Jake mirrors many of our own experiences fighting the disease of addiction with my son. We came to the same conclusion... We can fight alongside him in his battle, but ultimately he has to lead the fight. Only he can save himself by opening his heart to a higher power and working through the 12 steps and using the tools. It will be a lifelong battle.
I am so grateful that others are beginning to share their stories. I have sensed from the beginning that hiding the disease gives it power. Our society needs to be very direct and open about this unique condition so that we can unify our efforts to treat it.
This author does a great job of expressing the anguish of the family, their fear of losing their beloved child and the effects it has upon each of them. As with any problem we encounter in our lives, we have to choose whether we are going to be diminished by it or a positive part of the solution. I appreciate her honesty and efforts to help help others on the same journey with a loved one.
