Amazing, rich sound, can hear the nuances of each instrument which weren't there in my previous pair of Apple earbuds. I can barely push the volume past 1 or 2 on my mid2010 MacBook pro using the Boom 3D app, and about halfway on my iPhone using the same app is about all I can take. They are very lightweight and very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. They fit over my ears which blocks out a lot of the outside noise. I've worn them on planes, and while they will not block out the engine noise, you can crank to volume up enough on these to where nothing from the outside becomes noticeable. Even at louder volumes, the clarity is still there. Another good feature is that the cord is completely removable from the cans, which means that if there is a problem with the cord, then you can just replace the cord and not the entire headphones. Hope my kittens aren't reading this!Read full review

Great sounding headphones which works really well across the sound frequencies. Very understated design, but gives as solid and nice impression. I am quite picky with all kind of details. Despite that very happy with the headphones! Only one negative worth pointing out - Sony not using natural leather means you will get hot. Really a shame and hard to understand why Sony skimps on such a marginal cost. Super comfortable and very lightweight. There you have it!

I am an avid audiophile. I have own many headphones from the Focal Clear to HifiMan Arya. My current favorite is the $3000 Meze Empyrean that in my opinion, does sound better over any open-backed headphone out there. That headphone make an song sound better than you have heard. But right now, I am reviewing a closed back headphone that is in $300 range so I am not going to compare this headphone to the Meze Empyrean. However, this headphone sound better than the other closed-back competitors' headphone that cost over $1000 up to $1500. If you want any headphone than sound better than this headphone, you need to spend an extra $2000 and you will get a better soundstage and mid separation than this headphone. But even those much more expensive headphones can not compete with the solid, full-shaped low end bass sound coming out of this headphone. Pound for pound, this model sound 20 times better than the Sony MDR-Z7 M2, which is the next model up in the Sony headphone chain, that originally retailed at $800. Right now that model goes for $600 but why do you want that headphone when you can get this one at below $300 and sounds infinitely better in every way? Sony does not always get things right in the closed back headphone game, but when it does, it comes out with this MDR1AM2. This headphone will make the music from your smartphone sound anew. But in order to get the full potential, you should invest in some affordable Hi Res portable music player like Fiio M9, which is quite affordable nowadays and use the 4.4 balanced cable that come with this headphone to complete your listening bliss. The music will sound that much better, the detail will be that much sharper, and the thumping bass will be much clearer and smoother. I just realize that I get to this point in the review and I have not mention the lightness and comfort of this headphone. To me, if the headphone is not comfortable to put on your head, no matter how good it sound, it will be a miss for me. I am happy to report that this headphone is incredibly light and VERY comfortable on your head. You can listen music for hours with this headphone and you won't experience listening fatigue. Some headphone perform better in midrange, some in expansive soundstage and these headphone has shortcomings in one part or another, this headphone is able to make any genre of music sound better. The other Sony headphone that come close distance in sound is the Sony wireless WH-1000XM4 in the similar price range. But that headphone is a wireless model and can not be plugged into a 4.4mm balance plug. With balanced cable. this headphone win over the XM4 by a large margin in the solidness of the bass and midrange. The XM4 win in high treble with a wider soundstage by a narrow margin. I highly recommend this headphone for anyone. And no, I does not work at Sony or affiliate with it, or being paid to write this review. I am simply a person who have gone through a bunch of headphones, most of them are much more pricey than this headphone, and spent a good amount of money to chase the perfect sounding headphone that can handle any music genre. I landed on the Meze Empyrean for Open Back, and this Sony headphone for the open back. I effectively end my headphone hunt and is very happy with these two in my collection.Read full review

It’s lighter. It’s more comfortable. It comes with a balanced cable. It has tighter and more defined bass. It has a larger sound stage. The carrying pouch actually fits the headphones unlike the one from the 1A. They’re easier to drive. The perfect portable closed-back headphone!
