This is a "must read" if you have been to Jamaica, but anyone who picks up this book can't put it down. Rosehall is a plantation which has become a tourist attraction in Montego Bay. The story dating to the early nineteenth century claims to be "founded on fact". Mrs. Palmer, plantation owner and young widow, widow has buried three husbands. Her designs are now on the handsome Robert Rutherford who becomes an overseer at Rosehall. The young widow, practiced in Obeah magic, is a threat to anyone who stands in her way. Islanders tell tourists that Mrs. Palmer buried a husband beneath each of three existing palm trees on the property. One has to decide for themselves how much is fact or fiction.
I was in Jamaica last month and toured Rosehall. They had the book in the gift shop, but I didn't have time to buy it. I was surprised to find several copies available online - very inexpensive, with no shipping!! I'm not sure if content would be appreciated by all readers, but for one who toured the actual plantation, I am finding it very fascinating (and based on a true story). It was published back in 1929, so hard to find.
