Star Spangled Banner Details Producer: Eddie Kramer, Kiss Distributor: Universal Distribution Recording type: Live Recording mode: Stereo SPAR Code: n/a Album notes Kiss: Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Eric Singer (vocals, drums); Bruce Kulick (guitar). Additional personnel: Derek Sherinian (keyboards). Recorded live in Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Indianapolis, Indiana during Kiss' 1992 "Revenge Tour." If ALIVE III doesn't quite contain the overall quality of material that ALIVE! or ALIVE II did, it nonetheless offers its share of gems. Out of the later (post-makeup) Kiss songs, "Lick it Up" and "Heaven's on Fire" seem to hold up best when thrown in the company of "Detroit Rock City" and "Deuce." Luckily the duds are few, made up for by an inspired reworking of the "Star Spangled Banner" (which should make any self-respecting head-banger place his hand over his heart while continuing to bang his head) and the somewhat radical reworking of the old Argent chestnut "God Gave Rock and Roll to You." Seemingly inspired by these covers and the energy surge that must come from playing in Detroit (The "Rock City" where much of the album was recorded), Gene and Paul put on a show more than worthy of the Kiss name and legacy. ALIVE IV anyone? Editorial reviews ...even if Kiss hasn't maintained its mid-'70s chart presence, their material remains as crunchy and melodic as ever....this third time is a charmer... Musician (07/01/1993) 3 Stars - Good - ...'Deuce,' vintage Kiss, rendered here with rampant punch, still sounds awesome, despite Gene Simmons's now mellowed manly holler....canny power pop given a merciless headbanging... Q Magazine (06/01/1993) ...Tighter and tougher than ALIVE II, if not the landmark ALIVE!... - Rating: B Entertainment Weekly (05/21/1993)Read full review
The standout and my favorite of the 4 Alive CD's. Paul's singing is really at its peak with incredible emotional and feel (soul). It's just awesome as he appears to be inspired by playing with the other great musicians. The lead guitar work is a standout, superior, powerful, clear, clean and bold, alla Jimmy Paige. The drums are excellent period. So smooth, active and clear. "I Still Love You" and "Creatures Of The Night"are my personal favorites on this CD as they clearly verify the improved music and awesome vocals. All the songs are great. Vintage Kiss power rock with soul.I want to give it six stars ******
This was Kiss's first good album since Creatures of the Night. A lot of their albums after they removed their makeup were extremely lackluster but this album was the exception by using hit songs such as Detroit Rock City, I Still Love You, Creatures of the Night, I Love It Loud, Forever, and I Was Made For Loving You. Kiss always seems to have great success with Live Albums and this was no exception. Definitely worth every penny!
A great live album BUT,,, it is going to be released as a set in Nov. 2006. The set contains Alive 1,2,3 and the origional Millenium concert version of Alive 4. It will also contain bonus materials so... A great album all around though and it has no trouble standing on it's own.
his album was a surprise. A lot of fun and some really great performances of some of the more under-appreciated Kiss tunes. Well worth picking up and considering you've heard Alive 1 and 2 maybe a zillion times - this one will get a lot of play.
