This is a fun film which was ahead of its time. At least the stars of the film (Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo) were. These 3 men portrayed 3 drag queens in competition for a national title. The drive from New York in their 1967 Cadillac convertible to LA for the national competition. The story is about the adventures they encounter along the way. The film was well acted (the men acted like they'd been doing drag for years-without being too campy). The direction and production were both well done. The film is enjoyable and lighthearted but with a moral.

This movie is a vanilla version comedy about social violence towards gender difference, in the back ground; the gender violence society expresses against male women and female women, both. This movie gently links them together, appropriately so. I suppose I'd have to say that Patrick Swayze is the star drag queen who is gorgeous dressed as a woman. He'd look good in anything (or nothing) I bet! Surprisingly, Wesley Snipes steps way out of his usual characters to play a totally not passing drag queen who is hysterically funny and bumbling, especially in high heels. Stockard Channing also steps out of top leading and supporting lady character to be a miserable victim housewife of husband battery and assault. She and Swayze (who passes as a woman quite well) become close "girlfriends," and Swayze is the one who takes up for her when she is abused. It's really an all star cast with Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Melinda Dillon, Arliss Howard, Chris Penn, John Leguizamo, Patrick Swayze, & Wesley Snipes. The forefront story is that three drag queens have set out from NY for Hollywood to do a beauty pageant. They become hopelessly stranding (like the 3 Australian drag queens in the more adult R-rated "Priscilla Queen of the Desert"). While they are awaiting their Cadillac convertible car parts, they show that gender difference doesn't make any difference, even in a small US Midwestern community because as humans, through compassion, understanding, and courage we have much more in common being human than not. If you're looking for a gender-bender comedy that is a little slap-stick, clean cut, and cute, this is the one.Read full review
Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) and Chi Chi Rodriguez (John Leguiazamo) as 3 drag queens head on on a road trip from NYC to Hollywood to compete in a Drag Queen of the year contest. Vida and Noxeema take Miss Chi Chi under their wings to help her become more than a boy in a dress. Their car breaks down in a small town where they spend the weekend. The 3 learn a lot about themselves and the locals learn a lot from the ladies. Being true to yourself comes through loud and clear. John Leguiazamo I think steals the show. Naive and unafraid. Patrick Swayze makes a beautiful elegant woman. Wesley Snipes is passable, but his muscles are a bit obvious. We watched it as a family, including my 75 yr old parents, and my 13 yr old son. My mother could not believe Chi Chi was a man lol and thought Patrick Swayze carried the role as Vida very well. Loved Robin Williams, Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner... We loved it and there are some good quotes to be had.... I am the Latina Marilyn Monore I got more legs than a bucket of chicken. I feel like Miss Jayne Mansfield in this car. Oooh, Jayne Mansfield. Not a good auto reference. Your approval is not needed. Approval neither desired nor required Definately a fun movie, the costuming is great and even watching it 3 times there is no way John Leguiazamo is Chi Chi..amazing!!! He carried the part very well.Read full review
I'm not sure why Patrick,Wesly, and John decided to make this movie, but it just expanded on their talents as actors. The story of three men dressed in drag, going to a drag queen contest in LA. When they were stopped by the local cop and did he ever get a surprise. The cop got walluped and the drag ladies thought he was dead so they sped off and finally their car broke on a lone highway and through a towns hospitality and car repair, they brought back life to this small town. In return they, the towns people protected them when the deputy wasn't killed after all and was coming for them. It's a great, fun movie to watch. I liked it, because it showed Patrick and Wesly and John's talent through out the movie. I watch it over and over
Always loved this movie. It is a funny yet heartwarming glance into the lives of others. Snipes, Leguizamo and the late Swayze did well in their roles. Nice find. Speedy delivery.

This movie is fantastic. It's way more than just a "drag queen" movie. It's heartwarming, it's wonderfully scripted. The characters are engaging. Overall a total fantastic movie.

I first saw this movie when first released and bought the VHS tape. It was hard to imagine three actors playing 'drag queens' in humorous, kind, intelligence and with the deep convictions of respect for other people even when they were not always treated with respect. The story is presented through dialogue and physical appearance of the main characters in a very believable manner. There is no use of profanity, excessive nudity or sex scenes to embellish the strong message of importance of human kindness and mutual respect. Very good acting by the main characters. I wanted to be able to see this uplifitng movie again because it seems like each time I watch it, I catch some line I may have missed earlier. A lot of narrow minded people could take a lesson from this movie about how to treat 'different' people with respect, kindness and acceptance. Read full review

A not too popular gem, with Christopher Penn (R I P) giving a great performance( as usual). Patrick Swayzee, Wesly Snipes, John Leguizamo, Stockard Channing and Blythe Danner are are terrific, as is Robin Williams in a cameo role.Really funny and engaging flick. Gay and straight audiences will laugh ' til it hurts. I highly recommend viewing and adding to your DVD collection.

I love this movie. Patrick Swayze makes a pretty good-looking drag queen and his supporting actors did too. There was nothing fake about them. I loved the story line and I loved the ending too. It's every bit as entertaining as Robin Willams' movie, The Birdcage. And I feel grateful to have both in my collection.
