While Raintree County is no Gone with the Wind, it does have an interesting background for a movie.. Based on a book by Ross Lockridge (his only book as he committed suicide), the movie has Elizabeth Taylor playing a Southern Belle with a deep secret that will eventually drive her mad!
This role led to Taylor's first Oscar nomination and meeting Mike Todd, who she would marry. Her co-star, Montgomery Clift, had an auto accident that would delay production. Clift would never be the same after the accident, as his good looks were permanently changed. Taylor actually saved his life by pulling teeth out of his throat so he would not suffocate! Now for the movie! Eva Marie Saint plays a woman in love with Clift as they grew up together. Unfortunately for Saint, Taylor appears and wins Clift's affection. Their marriage is far from happy as Taylor descends into madness. The Civil War begins and life in Raintree County changes too, The drama outside this movie was probably more interesting than what is on the screen but the movie is well acted, it has great cinematography and worth seeing just for that.
Simply not the best recording. Some jumpy lines, as though it was taken from an old VHS recording. What is great about this film is the lovely photography, boohoo.... Moreover, it's also on two discs, why? Yet, too much trouble to return, a senior and don't get out that often.
I was surprised at the poor quality of the copy. The colors were washed out as if a teenager made a poor copy. The story itself was long and boring. Sure wish I'd read the reviews of this movie first, but the poor quality of the DVD made it agony to watch. Hubby quit at mid-point. GWTWit is not.
