  • Cleobury's Messiah Has No Peer

From the purely musical perspective I've never seen a better performance of Messiah than this one. King's College Choir is scintillating and all four soloists are absolutely superb. Stephen Cleobury recorded Messiah with King's College Choir three times. This recording, made in 1953, was done in a dark sanctuary in the Netherlands. The only negatives are that the technology is dated and that the venue in the Netherlands is less attractive than King's College Chapel in Cambridge. In 2009 Cleobury recorded Messiah with King's College Choir in King College's glorious Cambridge, England chapel. Again, the choir and the soloists are first rate. I especially liked alto Alice Coote. In the air "He was despised" she reminded me of legendary Kathleen Ferrier. Also, the 2009 recording, unlike the one from 1993, has subtitles.
