This paper shredder cuts into strips but strips are only about an inch long. If you don't have the original waste basket or if the waste basket breaks you can still use it but there is a button on the bottom you will need to press down on and tape over it so the button is always pressed. Normally this button would be pressed by it sitting on the original waste basket. But chances are you won't have that exact shape on your home waste basket. Overall very nice paper shredder. I can take junk mail and put the whole envelope without even opening the junk mail. . Only once did I have junk mail that had a plastic like a credit card inside the envelope that stopped it. Backed out the envelope and put the plastic credit card thru by itself and it went right thru. Then I put in the half shredded paper part and that went thru. Also anything with staples - I usually remove the staples.Read full review
