Reviews"Fascism: A Warning is dedicated to victims of fascism, but also to "all who fight fascism in others and in themselves". Mrs Albright has earned the right to that ambitious mission-statement. At a moment when the question "Is this how it begins?" haunts Western democracies, she writes with rare authority.... [Yet] if her learning is to be expected, her way with words is a happy surprise, as is her wisdom about human nature. Free of geopolitical jargon, her deceptively simple prose is sprinkled with shrewd observations about the emotions that underpin bad or wicked political decisions." -- Economist "Albright [has] serious credibility on the subject. She witnessed the evils of Fascism firsthand, as her book movingly chronicles. And she effectively makes the case: pay more attention to the signals, subtle and strong. A lot more." -- The New Yorker "Why, as Madeleine Albright asks early in her new book, 'are we once again talking about fascism?' Who better to address these questions than Albright, whose life was shaped by fascism and whose contribution to the cultivation of democracy as a stateswoman and private citizen is unparalleled? In Fascism: A Warning Albright (with Bill Woodward) draws on her personal history, government experience and conversations with Georgetown students to assess current dangers and how to deal with them." -- New York Times "Fascism [is] the work of a woman who knows authoritarianism when she sees it. And she sees the seeds of it not only in a slew of leaders hell bent on subverting democratic norms--Turkey's Erdogan, Venezuela's Maduro, Hungary's Orbán, and others--but also in Donald Trump, whom she calls in the book 'the first antidemocratic president in modern U.S. history.'" -- The Daily Beast "Besides providing an overview of the careers of Mussolini and Hitler, Albright looks at leaders such as Venezuela's Hugo Chávez, Turkey's Recep Erdogan, Hungary's Viktor Orban, and Russia's Vladimir Putin.... Sage advice in perilous times." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Incisive... [Albright] offers cogent insights on worrisome political trends." -- Publishers Weekly "Albright outlines the warning signs of fascism and offers concrete actions for restoring America's values and reputation. There is priceless wisdom on every page." -- Booklist (starred review), Why, as Madeleine Albright asks early in her new book, 'are we once again talking about fascism?' Synopsis#1 New York Times Bestseller Best Books of 2018 -- The Economist A personal and urgent examination of Fascism in the twentieth century and how its legacy shapes today's world, written by one of America's most admired public servants, the first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state A Fascist, observes Madeleine Albright, "is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have." The twentieth century was defined by the clash between democracy and Fascism, a struggle that created uncertainty about the survival of human freedom and left millions dead. Given the horrors of that experience, one might expect the world to reject the spiritual successors to Hitler and Mussolini should they arise in our era. In Fascism: A Warning , Madeleine Albright draws on her experiences as a child in war-torn Europe and her distinguished career as a diplomat to question that assumption. Fascism, as she shows, not only endured through the twentieth century but now presents a more virulent threat to peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II. The momentum toward democracy that swept the world when the Berlin Wall fell has gone into reverse. The United States, which historically championed the free world, is led by a president who exacerbates division and heaps scorn on democratic institutions. In many countries, economic, technological, and cultural factors are weakening the political center and empowering the extremes of right and left. Contemporary leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un are employing many of the tactics used by Fascists in the 1920s and 30s. Fascism: A Warning is a book for our times that is relevant to all times. Written by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past., #1 New York Times Bestseller "Albright outlines the warning signs of fascism and offers concrete actions for restoring America's values and reputation. Written by someone who not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past., From one of the most admired international leaders, comes a timely, considered, and personal look at the history and current resurgence of fascism today and the virulent threat it poses to international freedom, prosperity, and peace. At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly thirty years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to re-emerge on the global stage-sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States-that to Albright, looks very much like fascism. Based on her personal experience growing up in Hungary under Hitler and the Communist regime that followed World War II, as well as knowledge gleaned from her distinguished diplomatic career and insights from colleagues around the globe, Albright paints a clear picture of how fascism flourishes and explains why it is once again taking hold worldwide, identifying the factors contributing to its rise. Most importantly, she makes clear what could happen if we fail to act against rising fascist forces today and in the near future, including the potential for economic catastrophe, a lasting spike in terrorist activity, increased sectarian violence, a rash of large-scale humanitarian emergencies, massive human rights violations, a breakdown in multilateral cooperation, and nearly irreparable self-inflicted damage to America's reputation and capacity to lead. Albright also offers clear solutions, including adjusting to the ubiquity of social media and the changing nature of the workplace, and understanding ordinary citizens' universal desire for sources of constancy and morality in their lives. She contends that we must stimulate economic growth and narrow the gap between the rich and poor, urban and rural, women and men, and skilled and unskilled; work across borders to respond to transnational challenges; and ultimately recognize that democracy's unique virtue is its ability-through reason and open debate-to find remedies for its own shortcomings. Fascism includes a dozen black-and-white photographs., #1 New York Times Bestseller "Albright outlines the warning signs of fascism and offers concrete actions for restoring America's values and reputation. Written by someone who not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past., Having grown up in Czechoslovakia under the Nazi and Communist regimes, former Secretary of State Albright can give context to her discussion of the rise of reactionary tendencies in the world today, from Russia's Vladimir Putin, the Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte, and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Marine Le Pen, Brexit, and Donald Trump. Here she explains why these views are bursting forth, how they can be countered, and what the consequences will be if they aren't. With a 150,000-copy first printing and a ten-city tour.

  • Fascism's lies lead to misery and war - defend democracy at all costs

The author weaves a well-grounded and compelling case-history chronicling the lock-step rise of fascism, nationalism and inevitably, dictatorship. She shows how fascism strangles democracy, looks for scapegoats and inevitably, leads to war. Albright develops the rise of Benito Mussolini in Italy in the 1920's and shows how his methods were aped, play-by-play by Hitler. Adding German precision made it all the more lethal. England's Neville Chamberlain's cowardly betrayal of Czechoslovakia where he (and France) carved up and gave Germany the largely German-speaking "Sudentenland" for "lebensraum" (literally "living space or room") are nearly identical to Putin's claim on Crimea. Trump's betrayal of Ukraine to appease Putin are again, eerily similar. The author warns that a rising tide of fascism's lies and so-called "strongmen" always lead to misery and war. She asks us to stand and defend the liberty.

  • An easily read heavyweight.

The author is writing about first hand experiences. The subject is very timely because we are almost reliving events today. I hope this gets translated into many languages because most of us on this planet, especially the alleged civilized world will learn something.

  • A highly accessible plain-language account of fascism

A superb commonsense account of 20th century fascism in plain language, derived from Albright's own experience as well as historic fact. I'd have wished for at least some more scholarly additions. But I'm glad of Albright's making the subject so accessible.

  • History repeats itself.

Brilliant book though scary to contemplate what I agree will happen to our democracy. Allbright warns us of the dangers of a pending fascism from either side of the political spectrum due to ignorance and or complacency, so it behooves us to pay attention to her warnings.
