We are currently enjoying the entire Story of the World series as a family. Volume 2: The Middle Ages has been a great deal of fun to read. Susan Wise Bauer is very entertaining and gives a good overview of the time period. We can't speak highly enough about this series! Buy them all.
My 10 and 13 yo boys love the format of this history. The stories are entertaining and they are able to retain much of the information. The activities are on a younger level but with options to scale it up for older kids.
The Story of the World: Interesting and Succinct at the Same Time
My daughter (2nd grade) gets little to no history instruction in school and when they have a "special" period focused on history, it is limited (for the most part) to the currently evolving history of the United States. I bought this book (as well as the prior, Volume I) to supplement her understanding of world history and the connectivity of world events. In the beginning, I would read sections of the book to her, moving chronologically through time. Now she is intrinsically interested and will pick up the book on her own to find out what happens next.
