This was finally the right starter for my 65 Ford Galaxie with 390 FE. The nosecones of the ones supplied as reman. units from the local parts stores were not compatible with my ring gear and were making bad noises during operation. This one has a flat surface that clears the flexplate and the inset bevel around the area that the Bendix gear rests is a feature of the correct one for this application.
