I've read most of chronicles of this era. Lewis and Clark, Jermiah Johnson, Crow-Killer, Billie Hamilton, Brigham Young, 1819 Yellowstone Expedition, etc. Most Americans have little exposure, knowledge or connection to the western USA before the 1840's. The west contained mostly Indians--whose cultures had not yet been destroyed and very few white people. It was a paradise of sorts. This book is written much like a journal. I found it refreshing and poignant.
