This is a rather well done documentary telling the story of an American art collector named Robert C. Barnes. Through wealth generated as a result of developing a successful drug, he purchased art created by the likes of Picasso, Cezane, Van Gogh. However, he didn't just purchase such art for art's sake. He bought the best of the best. The best Picassos, the best paintings by Matisse and Renoir, hung from the walls of The Barnes Foundation; a building he built to display the masterpieces. After his death in 1951, a conflict slowly increases in significance over where his art collection should be kept and displayed. Barnes hated art critics. He refused to allow anyone other than students, or those not associated with the art business, access to his collection. The point of view in this documentary is that of the people supporting Barnes's intention to have the art remain in the Foundation, and not be displayed in any museum. There is a bit of drama, a bit of comedy, and a what looks like thorough research. I recommend it.Read full review
Barnes' foundation was a work of art in itself? Has the foundation been reduced to a collection of paintings? An overview from the perspective of those who fought the grab. Anyone who has fought the good fight against overwhelming forces and lost will recognize themselves.

One of the better documentaries I've seen. Very detailed about the disdain towards museums Barnes had and the lengths these museums went through to bypass Barnes' last will.

I love this DVD. After seeing it, I want to visit the Philadelphia art museum to see their exhibit. Yes, everything was moved there a few years ago, much to the dismay of Dr. Barnes.

The Barnes Foundation was an internationally known teaching institution based in Merion, Pennsylvania. The rich & powerful members of Philadelphia's elite who'd made fun of Dr. Barnes taste & collection during his lifetime...made did not tarry to usurp the collection for 'the common good'.
