It is a good workout but very different then traditional workouts. It is slower, controlled movements. The jumping section at the end of the dvd is very challenging. I studied ballet many years ago, and have been practicing yoga and running for years, as well as doing more traditonal workout dvds and I found this to be a good workout although very different then anything I had done before. I think it is a challenging workout and I enjoyed it very much. Some of the choreography is a little quick, but you eventually get it and the music is nice. I think if you have a background in ballet you will enjoy thid dvd very much, especially knowing that it is the New York City Ballet!
I bought the New York City Ballet Workout 1 DVD because I wanted a thorough workout I could do at home that was both fun and beautiful to do. For the untrained in classical ballet, such as me, it is a very challenging program. It has a good warm-up which immediately gets my heart rate going, followed by pre-workout stretches. The main body of the program is easy to follow and designed so you can choose which exercises you want to do in a given session. All of the ballet steps and barre work are very simple and easy to follow yet plenty challenging for a beginner. There's also a section devoted to abs. And of course, it's all so exquisite to perform! Gracefulness is a bonus benefit of the workout. If you choose to do the entire workout it's about an hour long, including a beautiful cool down & post-stretch called Reverence. There's also a choice of music: Classical or a mellow Asian-jazzy fusion. Since I've been doing the New York City Ballet Workout three times a week for about a month, I've noticed I have more consistent energy, improved muscle tone in my thighs, calfs and abs, better posture, and I'm getting better at the simplest of ballet! I used to take dance classes in high school, and I always loved it. When I got to college I stopped and put on a lot of weight and got out of shape. I bought this DVD because I knew doing ballet exercises would be enjoyable and affective and that it would keep my interest, and it really does. I do the program every other day, and I love it! Athletes, teens, dancers, adults, and even people with some extra pounds can do the DVD. When I started I did a lot of "modified" versions of the exercises as I didn't have the strength, but I'm slowly getting up to doing the full version. A+++++++++++++
I bought this because it looked different than the usual workout videos, and it is. I love it. I never had the opportunity to take ballet as a child. You're not going to be a ballerina just by using this video, but it does give you insight on how difficult this dance is and how hard they work at it. The stretches and exercises are great. You get a chance to work areas of your body you never knew were there. Love it! Great dvd!
I got this for my tween ballerina daughter. It’s not very long/involved, and she was somewhat bored with it. Would not recommend.
