Miyazaki is brilliant. This is somewhat autobiographical and shows life in Japan before WWII; it is the least fantastical of all his movies. And this makes it very effective. It is very easy to get lost in his tales, and the soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi always helps. I prefer watching it subtitled rather than dubbed into English, but both work: the cadences of Japanese seem to fit the animation better, to me.

I purcase;d this for my daughter, 30 y/o, who loves the story line of this video. Happy I could find it on English, new, at a great price.

Bought this DVD because of the praise by lots of people. However, it is just a typical Japanese cover up for their crime committed during the Second World War. It is such a shame that this poison film is from a famous Japanese cartoon maker.
