Who was the first patriotic superhero? Captain America? Nope. That honor goes to the Shield (Joe Higgins) who premiered in January 1940. The Shield has been released by MLJ (Pep Comics), Mighty Comics, Archie Comics, Red Circle. and DC under their Impact Comics line, Dark Circle Comics and under their own name.Joe Higgins was working on a chemical formula for super-strength (sound familiar?). that his father started. Joe uses the initials S.H.I.E.L.D. (Sacrum, Heart, Innervation, Eyes, Lungs, Derma) as his secret identity. He had super strength, invulnerability and ability to make great leaps.
