Those familiar with Ulver know they can be unpredictable when it comes to releases. Since Themes from William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven and Hell, Ulver have been known more for there experimentation than their black and folk metal roots. As the title suggests this is actually the original motion picture soundtrack to a film, though it is stated what you hear is not strickly what you see. It's not a new concept to release an album such as this, as the previous album Lyckantropean Themes was also made for a film. I am yet to see either, but I would guess they are dark sagas judging by the music. Unlike the previous album with track titles being numerical this time the 16 tracks on the album have each been given titles. There is a constant flow in the music up to track 12 where there is a brief pause followed by some spoken language, then back to the music. If you are looking for a metal fix listen to the bands early work, this work needs to be treated more as an instrumental album to reap it's full rewards. The orchestration is thoughtfully constructed displaying a range of diverse abilities from talented musicians who lend their skills to other forms of the arts whilst still existing as a full time band.Read full review
