I had the MFSL Gold CD version of this album and had heard this SACD version at a friend's house in 5.1 Surround. Then I listened to the the remastered stereo version on the SACD disk. Then, I finally listened to the MFSL Gold CD version. In comparison, technology has caught up to the older MFSL Ultradisc. I have to say that there was considerate improvement in sound quality at a lower price. But the system used in this listening experiment was not high end, but adequate. The system was comprised of a pair a DCM speakers, a pair of Klipsch towers, a Yamaha center speaker and a Yamaha 5250 5.1 Surround Sound Receiver. The SACD disc and the MFSL Gold Disc were played on a Sony 5 disc DVD-CD changer equipped for SACD and plugged in as a external decoder into the Yamaha Receiver. The subwoofer was turned off both in the receiver and the Sony disc changer as the size of the speakers provided adequate bass. The SACD had improved highs and good mid level lows. The complete lack of hiss really fascinated me as this was slightly detectable on the MFSL Gold CD. While the MFSL CD version of this album is highly collectible and no longer in print (and it is 24k gold), I have to say that the SACD version of this album has a better sound at a lower price. This is primarily due to new technology since the original issue of the MFSL Gold Ultradisc version.Read full review
In my humble opinion this is one of Elton Johns top 4 Albums. The song "Love Song" is one of the most direct and heartfelt ballads ever written. "Love is the Opening Door" & "Love is what we can here for", are just a sample of two great song written lines. The non SA CD sounds very good, however this SACD is like the sound stage becomes far more textural. You here the strings being struck by the hammers in the piano. The guitars sing out, and Elton's voice is spot on with emotion and presence. If you like or love Elton John and you have never heard this LP or CD do yourself a favor and BUY THIS SACD so that you can here it in all it's clarity and glory.
This is the classic early Elton John album that helped establish him as a Rock heavyweight. Great audio quality, but I wish the 5.1 mix was more adventurous. Better than no Tumbleweed in 5.1, I guess. The mix suffers from what I call "auditoriumitis" - the mixdown engineer basically sets up the mix in more of an expanded front performance rather than putting you in the middle of the band. The 5.1 mix of The Doors "La Woman" album is an example of "putting you in the middle" - it sounds like the Doors are set up in a circle around you. Still, worth checking out if your a 5.1 freak like me.

If you're an Elton John fan and a fan of "Tumbleweed" this is the ULTIMATE version of the record. The surround sound mix is BRILLIANT. The sound is as clean as can be. It really feels like you're in the studio while they're recording it. Not much else to say except you've GOT TO HEAR IT.
