I originally watched some of the episodes on our local PBS station WGBH Boston and "I was hooked". When I saw that the price of getting this title on eBay was cheaper than getting it from the PBS web-site, I ordered it. It's a drama, set in 1862, Alexandria, VA, which had been confiscated by the Union forces. The two settings of this story are the Green household and the hotel they own, but which had been confiscated by Union forces for use as a hospital, which is just a couple buildings down the street. There are plenty of "twists and turns" in the plot to keep the story interesting. In fact, this series doesn't feel like it has ended; I wouldn't be surprised if PBS decides to make at least one more 6 episode series. Attention to even the smallest of details is paramount in this series also, right down to interior design of the sets. As the series continues, we learn a little more about the different characters, and even meet two members of the family of one of the contract surgeons, when his brother is wounded in battle and needs a lower leg amputation. The surgeon's mother was asking for the impossible when she requested her son "save the leg." Today, they probably could have saved his leg, but not back then, I really enjoy films like this and am a fan of Call the Midwife as well. With a lot of productions, I will record off air, but not so with this and Call the Midwife. No, these titles, I got the commercial sets and call it money well spent.Read full review

I love the stories that involve the personal aspect of the civil war. Yes battle strategies are important but I feel the people on the battlefields and the stories behind them are more important. They were brothers, sisters, daughters and sons, mothers and fathers and should no way be shortchanged. We have to realize as a nation the war changed at least 500,000 peoples lives and may still be affecting families today due to the losses paid back then.
