Well I have to ask myself, If I was a 20 year old watching this DVD for the first time, how would it roll? The answer would be: Slowly, it would roll very slowly. Hey but I'm 54 years old and I grew up with this fossil's music soaked in my brain. The tunes have been there all my life. The good news to report is that this concert is very faithful to the original spirit of the songs. All of his hits are here. He plays them like you remember them, there is a backing upright bass player and a good conga player as well. The sound quality is great, although very bottomy, with 5.1 Dolby you have to back off the bass almost completely just to get a even mix. I have to give this concert an average rating because the performance is not electrifying! Yes the concert was part of a TM (transcendental meditation) event in L.A., and if I took a 20 year old to it, I'd probably get the question: "How is TM any different from a good Valium Buzz?" There are no "Sparks" in this concert. Listen, Donovan changed my life back in the 60's by playing solo acoustic, crosslegged on a carpet on the Smother's Brothers Comedy Hour. His music is great. But if you want to hear him as he originally sounded, go buy "Donovan The Definitive Collection", a two CD Box Set. The electricity is there, Jimmy Page playing the studio ace with most of england's best players backing him up. The cool thing I can say about this concert is that its really fine that someone over sixty years old still has his chops and voice intact. Peace. . . Shoot, I recently made a solid silver peace sign medallion for one of my friends to sell on Telegraph Avenue in Berkely CA. It took more than a year to sell. He asked me if I could make any biohazard medallions. . . .Read full review
This reviewing thing is getting way out of hand. I buy something because I want it or need it. Now everybody wants you to revue everything you buy and in most cases I doesn't make any sense. I just bought this box of washers and they are the best shiny and bright and they fit the bolt perfectly come on! Maybe if it were a new car or something I might have something to say. OK I have said my peace. Now Donovan is a great artist with a timeless style who I have been listening to for years and I'm glad he recorded this live concert before he got to old like some others of that genre.

I'm not a big Donovan fan, but I have to admit that his LA concert was pretty good.

It’s a good one. It would have been a great one with additional musicians.

Over thirty years ago, I toured with Don through Europe for five weeks where he gave one-night back-to-back performances. I was his lighting man (we were born the same year so we are contemporary). All the gigs were sold out and people clamoured to find tickets everywhere we went. The tour promoted "Essence to Essence", the album that followed "Cosmic Wheels". Though not as successful, the album heralded a dramatic change in Don's image and approach to songwriting which embraced his consuming interest in trancendental meditation. This Concert, "Live in LA", is given in association with the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace and Harmony. The play list is almost identical to that of the tour thirty-odd years ago in that Donovan (Leitch) sings his most popular songs from the sixties and seventies which made the charts here and in the USA. Today, these recordings are regarded as the genesis of the poetry and artistry of those times, if not an awakening to a more aware take on life and an increased consciousness of the nature of humanity. Other performers like Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Pete Seager et al were forging ahead with a 'shift' in popular song and this led to a short, but meaningful, review through music of who we are. The Cold War with Russia and the Vietnam War were present in the minds of these troubadors. This DVD is an intimate recording of a remarkable man, and is filmed live at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California. Don is accompanied by a superb duo of bassist Tom Mansi and percussionist Stewart Lawrence. Don's daughter, Astrella Celeste, accompanies her father as co/backing singer. (She was about three feet high when she attended the gigs in Dublin on the tour back then). The best part for me is when he sits cross-legged on a podium with his acoustic guitar and sings beautifully - he has always performed this way in gigs. For all Donovan fans, this Concert recording is highly recommended and , for those too young to know of him, it is certainly an archive of the music that shaped opinions in the world in its time. I am very pleased to own this disc and have great pleasure in reviewing my old friend's performance here. God Bless you Don.Read full review
