A Great All-Star Cast and story are the headliners of this 1980 classic realistic science fiction flick. What if before the Bombing of Pearl Harbor had ever taken place, that the power of a naval nuclear aircraft carrier called the USS Nimitz from one of the United States Navy's power houses had been present during the Japanese sneak attack? This becomes the scenario when during basic war game exercises in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii, the USS Nimitz becomes engulfed and is sent through a time warp and placed back in time hours before the attack, the USA suffered in what was the country's worst sneak attacks on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. This attack forced the United States into World War II on one of the most devasting attacks on American soil since the British tried to take Washington DC during the War of 1812. What would happen if the United States did have the nuclear capability of the Aircraft carrier Nimitz and all it's firepower during World War II? The coarse of history would drastically have changed the world. And World War II it's self would have ended much sooner. History changing perhaps, the United States would have ruled the world paving the way for Democracy and freedom for other countries too live by along with it's citizens? Filmed on location and in around Pearl Harbor and the Hawaiian Islands. This is one movie thats definitely worth adding to your movie library list! CAST: Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, Charles Durning, Kathrine Ross, James Farentino and Ronnie CoxRead full review
This picture although very out there in the time travel stuff is an amazing film for the F-14 Tomcat buff. The Jolly Rogers VF-84 sequences are great and the authenticity of the pilot gear etc... well it is the real deal. Story line is good and film sequences are well made - animation was in the infancy mode so today's animation makes this pretty amateurish. That being said, still a well photographed archives for the Nimitz and Jolly Rogers sequences. If you can put up with the continuous use of the irreverant use of God's name etc... the plot is good. In the end - I wish we could have seen some retribution for the Pearl Harbor attack via F-14's, Corsairs etc... but alas, this would have only screwed up history and the future. A great pic for those who love Kirk Douglas and cast. A hoot for us F-14 buffsRead full review
The carrier USS Nimitz goes through a time warp to Dec 6, 1941. What to do? Start WWll or let Japan bomb Pearl Harbor! To avoid a paradox the captain of the Nimitz confers with his top officers and one civilian on board to decide his options. As history often does it corrects itself & runs its course in interesting ways. Very entertaining movie. Classic acting by Kirk Douglas as the Captain & also all the rest of the cast. Loved the way it brought you to that moment in time of "infamy." Nothing to dislike as it is a very good film. Loved it for its ability to hold me in my seat. Bought it because I want to watch it many times.
This is movie is pure entertainment! It is one of my favourite time-travel movies. Originally released theatrically in the Summer of 1980. The premise is simple an aircraft carrier operating in the Pacific, enters a time warp, worm-hole, time corridor, whatever description you choose, & ends up arriving the day before Pearl Harbor is to be bombed by the Japanese! What would you do? What would anyone do? Thoroughly enjoyable and stars the likes of Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen,Katherine Ross, Ron O'Neal, Charles Durning, James Farentino, Soon-Tek Oh, just to name a few & produced by Lloyd Kaufman, who has a bit rols also! A treasure to add to anyones' dvd library. Highly recommended.
What if a modern day aircraft carrier suddenly went back in time to December 6th 1941 a day before the attack on Pearl Harbor Hawaii? Do they attack the Japanese fleet on their way to destroy our fleet? If they are now stuck in the past, do they get their orders from the Commander-In-Chief, President Roosevelt? If you are a history buff and if you like mysteries this is the dvd for you. I went to the theater to see this film when it first came out and loved it. Now with the dvd I will enjoy it again and again. I don't recall EVER seeing this film shown on TV. Maybe it has something to do with being politically correct? If you love a good film, buy it. The scenes on board the aircraft carrier are spectacular!
Worth a buy if you can get it cheap. This cult sci-fi movie has an interesting story; what if a modern aircraft carrier were to somehow go back to December 7, 1941? I won't spoil it, but its not that bad.

Stories concerning the paradox of time travel befuddle my wife and THE FINAL COUNTDOWN is no exception. Years after first seeing it, she is still likely to ask (apropos of nothing at all) "But how did he...?" or "Why didn't he...?" In spite of the billing of Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen, the aircraft carrier Nimitz and it's Tomcat fighter planes are the real stars of this movie. Briefly, the Nimitz sails into an electrical phenomenon and is transported back to the eve of Pearl Harbor. The captain's dilemma is this: does he intervene to thwart the attack and thus change history, or does he let the events play out as they have always played out? Things to dazzle you: the beautiful score, somehow thrilling and nostalgic at once, and the sight of Zeroes and Tomcats briefly sharing the same sky. A truly wonderful movie.Read full review
An exciting 'what if' movie. what if the Modern USS Nimitz was time warped back to just before one of the US Military's darkest days? It's engaging, and is a good vehicle for Kirk Douglas, back in his prime, and James Farentino does a credible job as the character at the crux of the drama. Martin sheen adds a dimension of an outsider as a Department of Defence/Private Contractor along for the ride. All in all a very good sci-fi film, and a pre-Top Gun look at modern carrier operations.

One of my wife's favorites of all time. She loves the mini-love story, and since she's a Navy brat, she loves the naval theme. Of course, the unexplained nature of the "storm" is something one will just have to accept to enjoy this movie, but the acting is good and the story is an intriguing one. What if we could go back in time and stop an atrocity that happened before we were born? How would it affect life as we now know it? Space/time continuum conundrums always fascinate me. This movie doesn't explore it as deeply as, say, the Butterfly Effect, but it's still a conversation starter.
