ReviewsRevealing the coming together of an important industrial concern and an important figure in the history of typography, this valuable book addresses a niche in the history of graphic design by detailing Edward Johnston's design of the London Underground typeface and signage system in the early 1900s. Johnston is best known today for reestablishing the techniques of hand- lettering and calligraphy with his Writing & Illuminating & Lettering (1906). But he is also known for designing the Underground's typography and redesigning its iconic roundel logo. This collaboration was an early example of a large corporate entity seeking out the expertise of a designer and applying the design in a systematic, well-thought-out way across all the products of the organization. Taylor tells the story succinctly, and the book offers very good color photographs, some of which were not previously available to the public. This is an accessible, easy-to-read book that nonetheless manages to bring insightful nuance to the Edward Johnston story. Highly recommended., "A symbol of London, globally recognized, the Johnston typeface is 100 years old in 2016. This book celebrates the typeface and the life and work of its creator, Edward Johnston. Illustrated with images from the collections at London Transport Museum and other relevant collections, it tells of the journey that the Johnston typeface has taken from Johnston's first meeting with Frank Pick in 1913 to the advent of New Johnston and its evolution and use up to the London 2012 Olympics." , A symbol of London, globally recognized, the Johnston typeface is 100 years old in 2016. This book celebrates the typeface and the life and work ......, It's one of the most iconic features of London life, yet perhaps the least celebrated: the Johnston typeface, which has decorated signage throughout the entire London Transport system for a century. This book celebrates the Johnston typeface and its creator, Edward Johnston (1872-1944), bringing him long-overdue recognition as one of the key creators of our shared visual image of London life. Richly illustrated with images from the London Transport Museum--including maps, posters, station signage, and much more--the book traces the evolution of the Johnston typeface from its first use in 1916 through the many subtle changes it's undergone in the century since, all the way up to its broad deployment for the 2012 London Olympics. No lover of London life or transportation buff will want to miss this beautifully designed and produced volume., The first official book to describe in detail the relationship between Edward Johnston and Transport for London.
