Reviews"'Finding My Voice' is the personal story of Diane Rehm, a talk show host for public radio in the Washington, D.C. area. It is the story of a woman--shaped by her Arab-American culture, an abusive mother, traditional female role expectations, her own psychological and physical challenges--who shares her confusion and her ongoing recovery in an passably interesting memoir. Her writing alternates between factual and emotional. It is painful to share her childhood experiences of the furious rages then days, even weeks of icy silences from her mother toward herself. Yet it is in these silences that she discovered what became not only a lifelong comfort but also her career. 'Radio," she notes, 'held for me a magic that was not to be found in my own household, a kind of friendliness and warmth that I could count on.' It was radio that sustained her through her mother's death when she was sixteen, her father's shortly thereafter, the failure of her first marriage, and the trials of her second marriage when familial routines developed into the boredom that eventually led to volunteer work at the radio station WAMU. Even as she moved upward at the station--from researching to producing to hosting--she confronted personal problems. But it is her experience with what was ultimately diagnosed as spasmodic dysphonia (a condition affecting the muscles that control speech) that is truly touching. Memoirs are tricky. Too often authors have little more to offer than their own life. Those worth reading take that life and make it larger than themselves, submerging the personal in favor of the human. While 'Finding My Voice' does not reach that level, it is nevertheless worth reading for the common struggle and ongoing victories it shares." Lauren Roberts, BookReviewClub.com "After working in radio for more than 20 years, Rehm successfully takes on the challenge of writing." Booklist "A fetching, straightforward account of the struggles and successes of a respected radio personality. Rehm, host of an eponymous National Public Radio Show, offers an intimate look into her childhood, marriage, career, and battle with a rare neurological disorder that has affected her speech and thus nearly destroyed her career... Told with honesty and simplicity. An articulate and inspirational travelogue of one woman's remarkable journey." Kirkus Reviews

SynopsisIn "Finding My Voice," nationally acclaimed public radio host Diane Rehm tells the story of her remarkable life - a story in three acts. First, her childhood in a traditional, Christian-Arab household dominated by her psychologically abusive and beautiful mother whose influence on her intelligent young daughter was substantial. Then, in her thirties she found her career, as the host of her own radio talk show, which 20 years later has become one of the most influential voices on radio today. Finally, she delves into her recent, frightening battle with the rare neurological disorder, spasmodic dysphonia (SD) that almost cost her all that she had gained in life.
