I own a HPI Nitro Rush Evo with the HPI Nitrostar T-15 Nitro Engine. For years I have struggled with difficult starting and erratic tuning once the engine was up to temp. Stripping down the engine revealed a slightly damaged piston and sleeve. At some point in its life, a bit of grit had got into the chamber and had gouged the piston/sleeve. This resulted in greatly reduced engine compression, and when up to temp, almost non-existent, hence being a PITA to tune... This piston and sleeve set was installed in my T-15, with the existing conrod and crankshaft. The engine runs like new!!! Tons of power and low-end torque, due to the good compression, and the engine idles and runs lovely. Highly recommended for an ageing engine to give it a new lease of life.... On the forums people recommend replacing the Conrod, as the higher compression puts a little more strain on it while it is broken in, HOWEVER I did not replace mine and it is fine. I do use an engine pre-heated to bring it up to temp first and was extra gentle during break-in, but it is fine 😎👍 Only thing I recommend buying and replacing at the same time as this item is the front and rear crankshaft bearings... I had mine explode and it would have damaged the new piston/sleeve if it had not happened before this was installed. Didn’t expect it but worth replacing as they don’t last forever! You have been warned 😉😂 The photos attached show the new and the old piston/sleeve for comparison, note that the new sleeve has slightly bigger ports, which I’m assuming will produce slightly more power as a result!
