I purchased this book on the advice of several people who demonstrate the holiness of life that is a natural result of prayer. Over the last 20 years I have read many different authors' writings about the spiritual life, and examples include: heavyweight Doctors of the Church such as St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, and St. John of the Cross; works from Henri Nouwen, Brennan Manning, and Thomas Merton; allegories, meditation books, and the tried-and-true Catholic prayer books such as The Pieta Prayer Book. Probably number over 100, but I wasn't keeping track. Of them all, only about 15 have found a permanent home in my spiritual reading library. This book will be added to it. I am unable to find the words that can adequately portray the effect Fr. Dubay's writing had on me. He speaks with a strength that is both gentle and firm without becoming overbearing or preachy-sounding. The writing was beautifully simple, theologically sound, and at the same time compelling. Over and over I found myself wondering how my journey would have been different, had I read this book 20 years ago, when a crisis triggered my desire to draw closer to God in prayer. I recommend it without hesitation.Read full review
Although just a primer on prayer, Dubay hits the nail on the head! He explains the richness of the various forms of prayer used in the Catholic Church. Great examples, great writing, easy to understand, and most important - easy to apply to your own prayer life. I'm ready now to dive into some of his other works.
