SynopsisIn this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Kent Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. It's a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Readers meet vivid characters like Jumbo, a 400-pound mechanic, and Annie, an 80-year-old Lakota woman living in a log cabin. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. Neither Wolf nor Dog takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience. As the story unfolds, Dan speaks eloquently on the difference between land and property, the power of silence, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. This edition features a new introduction by the author. • Neither Wolf Nor Dog--Enlightening, moving, informative and educational.

I actually read this book recently and was so impressed and moved by the subject matter that I ordered a copy of the book for a gift for a friend. The writing was great and the way the author unfolded the story conveyed by the indigenous elder was compelling. The author, himself, was unsure whether he was doing justice to the elder's story. He provided additional cultural information and it was all very enlightening. I would highly recommend this book and wish it could be required reading for high school students. It is not dry reading, at all, as might be imagined from the cover. It is extremely moving and I have continued thinking about the subject matter long after I finished the last page. I have also ordered more books by Kent Nerburn after discovering his talent with this book.

  • Truth and wisdom about the Native Peoples trials.

This is a fabulous true story, told through the eyes of a Native American Elder whose wisdom and pain are real and at times very painful to hear. Excellently written by Nerburn

  • great book

A very good story about the writer and an elder American Native, true story that is being made into a movie I hear. The book has taught me more about how we should live.

  • The brilliant #1 in a must read trilogy!

One of Kent Nerburn's most compelling books about American treatment of our Natives, the first in a trilogy. It is a must read for people who wish to learn about these terrible abuses. Easy to read, will keep you wanting the next book. I can not recommend more highly.

  • The title makes sense once you get into the book

I thought I was getting some authentic knowledge related to the experience of the American Indian. I like the style it is written in and makes it so you want to not put down. I did think the first few chapters were a little slow but it gets very interesting once you are into it.

  • Best book that I have read in a long time

It's wounderful that the knowledge of the other side has been made in print. This book should be read by American people.

  • Good Read

I read the book for book club. Although written in 1994 it is still current today. Beautiful prose.
