Ken Follett did a wonderful job on Pillars of the Earth. I can't wait to get the sequel to it. It was a very long book which took me about a month to read at about an hour of reading daily. The first couple chapters were hard to get into but then it took off. The history in the book is awesome enough let alone the fictional characters and their trials in life. I was amazed how Mr. Follett was able to twist and turn things around to make the book breathtaking. I didn't want it to end. I read a lot and after I finished this book I had to wait a few days before starting a new one. I just wanted to sit with the richness of the writing, story and entertainment that Mr. Follett had accomplished. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history and fabulous love stories.
This was a great read. kept you tied into the story. i stayed up for days just to finish this almost 1000 pger in less than a week. couldn't put it down. Characters are elaborately developed and well animated. You become very familiarized and personal with them. The phrase, "with his/her heart in their mouth" is overused but perhaps its printing humor, i eventually came to expect when it would be used. some of the plot was expectable, but the way in which the general result came about and how the plan was executed is marvelously elucidated by Mr. Follett. This is a definite read for anyone who loves the knight in shining armor type deal. Mr. Follett's other book, World with out end is really tempting me after this one.
Follett travels outside of his usual genre to create an intertwining story of the building of a cathedral in 1100's England. His detail of gritty daily life and the fleshing out of his characters is very engaging. While some of the vernacular is jarringly historically inaccurate it is easy to forgive because of the depth and breadth of the storyline. It is a commitment to read (close to 1000 pages) but well worth it. The price was right on this book and - as usual - Ebay delivers fantastic bargains. This seller was the epitome of courtesy and promptness. That's why I love Ebay.
Ken Follett has done a masterful job chronicling the lives of several individuals during the 1100's in his novel centered around the building of a cathedral. With several plots intertwined into a single building project, one cannot put the book down. This book is not for the faint of heart, however, with several graphic and violent scenes that serve to show the reader some of the barbaric side of human nature. The Pillars of the Earth is a wonderful and exciting read that would be highly recommended to anyone who loves a classic filled with adventure, betrayal, and passion.
I don't want to put it down. It's the prequel to World Without End which is my all time favorite book. I'm looking for all his books at thrift shops up and down the Treasure Coast.

My husband read Pillars of the Earth years ago, and has always encouraged me to read it. We took a trip to Italy in October, and after seeing all the beautiful cathedrals, etc. I knew that I had to read Pillars of the Earth. My husband still has the original paperback book, but the print is small, and hard for me to read, but low and behold they came out with a new edition, with larger print and I found it on ebay, and paid less than I would have at the book store. I haven't read it yet, because of the holidays, but I will start it soon.
Very uplifting and historical depth of detail to help you be a part of the era of Cathedral building in Europe.

I've always felt that I was born in the wrong century. If you have an interest in the middle ages as I do, this is the book for you. It's a great story and really details the importance of the great cathedrals in every day life of the Medieval man and woman. The writing style brings to mind great images of life during the Gothic era of cathedral building. Great characters! Give it a try!
This is one of the best books I have ever read! At some points I feel as if I am reading a historical document because Follett is so detail oriented, and sometimes I feel as if I am reading someone's diary because of the emotional and relational descriptions between the characters. The book is LONG but it is broken into very logical vignettes so that it almost feels like 5 little books rather than one large one. I really had issues putting this book down!
Never thought about reading this book. I stumbled upon it while looking for a book to take on vacation. It has turned out to be a pretty good read! It is very long though - over 900 pages! It is not only filled with historical content, but has a good story line and good character development.
