NEW, Stanley Sweetheart No. 9-1/2 Block Plane – Model 12-138, 149859, FEATURES A 2-1/8"-wide x 6-1/2"-long ductile iron base with a 1-3/4"-wide blade, COMES IN HANDY WHEN edge planing or doing any cross-grained work, THE EXTRA MASS COMES IN HANDY when edge planing or doing any cross-grained work, PRECISION-GROUND DUCTILE cast iron base for accuracy, Stanley’s No. 9-1/2 SWEETHEART Block Plane features a 2-1/8"-wide x 6-1/2"-long ductile iron base with a 1-3/4"-wide blade. At 2.3 lbs. it might be a little heavy for the tool belt, but the extra mass comes in handy when edge planing or doing any cross-grained work.
The machining of the center post was slightly off, causing the blade to want to center almost 1/16" off to the left. Slight burr on the back left of the heel. Blade was fairly sharp, but I gave it a slight camber and sharpened it to a finer edge. After that and a little oil and wax this worked great and has held the edge very well.
I also got the 60-1/2 version of this, and I will say that I use that one a little more, and find myself going for that one first most of the time.
Compared to the original planes that this one wants to be like, it is entirely to cumbersome and heavy. I don’t like it at and it’s impossible to find a toothed blade to fit it. Blades are not in the same format as old ones. I think this was made in the same factory as Northwood.
