It is a heavy duty and strong spike. I was able to easily drive it into the ground using a small 4x4 and a sledge hammer. I live in central NC, where we have heavy clay and drove it into the ground in a few minutes. I never hit a rock, so I got lucky and didn't have to pull it out and try it again. I used 2 galvanized screws with a hex head to attach the spike to the wooden post, that I had laying around. I think they were 3/8" screws. I drilled a pilot hole for each one, so it would be easier to screw in. The previous one I had lasted about 20 years.

I like these 4x4 post supports not just for mailboxes, I use these supports in my yard and garden for posts that I can mount birdhouses and bird feeders and many other garden and yard uses.
