First, a bit of clarification: I didn't need to wrack my brain over choosing this pen: I had, and regrettably lost, an 823 just like it, only in smoke (semi-translucent black) finish. I replaced *that* pen with another smoke 823, this time with a Fine nib: just as wonderful, but different. I don't think Pilot could make a pen with a mediocre nib unless it tried really hard. My ultimate goal, however, was to have two 823s, and since I recently had the funds free to finally purchase another one, I surfed it here. The pen arrived carefully packed, all documentation in place. Immediately filled it and started writing: All I can say here is that you'd really have to do a fantastic job to convince me that spending more would get me a better-writing experience than this pen offers: between a well-tuned nib right out of the box, an elegant filling system that happens to hold more ink than most any fountain pen in current production, and (for me, anyway) a near-perfect balance of size and weight (with or without the cap posted...I almost always write with it posted), this is a serious writer's pen, not pocket jewelry. (It's been noted in some circles that the 823's design aesthetic leans toward "boring"; that likely not accidental, and just fine with me.) In short: highly recommended.Read full review

The pen pours ink on paper like a syringe. It is extremely wet which makes it impossible to use, at least for me personally. My old Lamy and Metropolitan write way, way better... I am very disappointed.

I think custom 823 is in the same class as a MB 146. The nib is perfect, the ability to disassembly all pieces for cleaning, as well as the transparent barrel. All in one pen. Great buy and value.

The best quality fountain pen! The price corresponds to quality. Very capacious and very comfortable. I'm recommend!

I watched countless You-Tube videos of pen reviews. So many put this pen in top ten pen for daily writer/work horse, “if you buy one pen, buy this.” Then I watched a bunch of videos specifically on this pen. Never less then “this is a great pen.” I got one. Yes, brown is ugly color. But the nib is divine. This thing hold enough ink to last you WEEKS! Just gotta remember that if it starts writing a little dry, open the plunger using knob on end of barrel to let more ink flow. It is great to have an ink shutoff valve for piece of mind. Love being to see what color ink is on there and how much is left. Japanese quality you can count on.
