by far and away these have become my favorite cans. i have quite a few high-end headphones and i find myself reaching for these more often than any others. they are comfortable to wear for hours and hours but thet wouldn't matter if the sound wasn't great. they sounded great right out of the box but it has improved with every listen- accurate, tight base. perfectly balanced mids and a treble that is clear, precise and not too harsh. in all , they sound as good or better than cans costing much, much more. sony has really upped their game with these headphones and i tell anyone who will listen- don't hesitate and get these cans and you will thank me later. they are worth every penny and then some!

Five stars with reservations. First, you will not experience anywhere near this guy's full potential off a laptop. My setup: Mdr-z7, PHA-3, and big gold wire. You cannot run this setup to it's full potential off a laptop. I hook it to my Mac Pro Tower. Awesomely gorgeous, above cd quality. I found that the z7 doesn't sound right til you power it properly, just great when you do, above cd quality, and that isn't an understatement. I ordered a sound card to see if I can't get the same quality off the laptop, but that is work in progress. This is a thumping good phone in the right setup. So look to your setup.

These Z7s are the best headphones I ever tried to date. I spent a whole month in Japan auditioning headphones including Sennheiser, Audiotecnica, Fostex. I needed a headphone with impedance over 50ohms for my LG V20 quad Dac and these were hands down the best of the bunch for volume, details, musicality, spaciousness. I love Jazz and classical and instrumental mostly but also House music and Tribal House and I have to say the Z7s are a Jack of all Trades. They sound fantastic and full in details with all these genres. I use them for outside and they can be worn all day without feeling tired along Tokyo streets and inside the train. Being semi-open they keep the good sound in and mostly bad noise outside. At home I use them with my Desktop PC via a Creative Titanium HD and they also shine like a star. I had to listen also to the 2000USD new Z1R and the sound signiture is pretty much the same with just a touch of better more enfasized mids and highs. These Z7s are the bonsai of the Z1R but much easier to carry and use. These needs an Amp though if not the bass may sound off and bleeding into the mids a little. Use a portable amp for phone use or a Amp at home and you will see a huge difference in sound quality. At 70ohms they are the perfection to my ears coupled with my LG V20 with Quad Dac as the phone switches to high impedance mode above 50ohms. Few words bout the build quality: Outstanding. These cans are very well built. Not scretching plastic sound when using them. They are so quite. And the feeling when you wearing then is amazing. The earpads used are from an other planet. The Z7s deserve a 10/10 on my book.Read full review

These are high-end audiophile cans, but most of the public will misuse them. They're meant to be fed and amped with summit end equipnent, they won't take anything less, so they are not adaptable to mainstream media. On a less-than-perfect chain of sound supply and amplification, they will sound as the source. But, if fed well, they're awesome. Technological marvel, and very underpriced. If you are able to meet or exceed their requirements. If not, don't bother.
