I was replacing builder grade ceiling speakers. The new speakers I bought were 1 inch higher than the old. No problem on 4 of the speakers, but the last one was directly under a major structural roof truss. Could not cut an inch off of the 1/2 inch bottom of the truss. Thought I was going to need to cut a new speaker hole adjacent to the original hole, then patch the old hole and have the speakers unequally spaced. Then I found this product on ebay. It is sold in several thicknesses and diameters. One of sizes was almost perfect to provide the extra clearance. I just had to paint the spacer ring, glue it to the ceiling with liquid nails, and bingo, problem solved. .
