I'm an old guy who grew up listening to Motley Crue music. So when I saw the Netflix Original movie "The Dirt" I really wanted to read the book. Maybe it's my age...but I found the book so far (I'm a third of the way through) to be an extremely hard read content-wise. Well written, intriguing, insightful, but a gut-wrenching, hard, sometimes nauseating read. I'd read Hammer of the Gods (Led Zeppelin), but that in no way prepared me what was inside The Dirt. After watching the movie, I found myself connecting more with Mick Mars (the "old guy" in the band, albeit only by three-four years, maybe?). And I sympathized with Nikki Sixx for what he went through as a child and adolescent. But how those experiences shaped Nikki into the person he became was hard to read. At the end of the movie I felt redemption for the band, and maybe the book will provide that "relief" as well. But wow...the journey to get there...it's been a tough read so far. Granted, I can't put it down, so there's that....Read full review

I CANNOT put this Crue book down! There's so much opening of the Crue vaults. (I would have loved more & more behind the public scenes photos, however that being said the members explaining many photos included far outweighs this). I bought this book to read all of antidotes, happiness and tears of one of my favorite heavy metal bands. You can watch so many interviews with the Bad Boys as I have done and you think you have a good idea about them, but your mind's imagination cannot compete with the facts as told by each member along with their Managers. Each member peels back the public facade like the sweet but smelly, strong but soft on your tongue layers of an onion so that your mouth wets at the flavorful treat you're about to taste. Nikki Sixx is the greatly talented and crazy songwriter/bass player, Mick the overly intelligent been there, done that guitar God, Tommy the fun, wild, and non stop ass kicking drum player, and Vince the pretty Cali angel singing the sweet lyrics of our lives. If you like the Crue's music then go and get the book. If you love the Crue's music then run and get the book. If you're ready to read the most ass kicking, lip licking, and hip grinding non fiction story of sex, drugs, and rock and roll- then why are you still reading this dude? I bought this book because I have been a die hard Crue fan since I was 12 (now 30). All I have to say is "wow". Most of my childhood memories were somewhat mischievous but nothing compared to the diaries of Nikki Sixx and the gang. It's good... real good! Couldn't put it down. Read it front to back in the first evening I had it. If I had any advice for anybody, read this book, especially the bubble-gum pop losers, one hit American Idol wonders, and teen wanna-be hollywood rockers who got their start because their daddy knew someone at a label. Those retards (the previously stated wanna-be(s) and losers) have no idea what it takes to be as dedicated to a dream as Motley Crue was, is, and always will be.
Okay... I purchased "The Dirt" because I heard Val Kilmer was going to be in the movie which will be coming out in a year or two. I thought I should read the book before I see the movie. We also lost my grandson's father to suicide and this book addresses all of the problems he had in life with drugs and needles as he was a punk rocker and lead a similar crazy lifestyle like Motley Crue. This book helped me understand how a drug addict thinks and lives and feels. I also am somewhat of a Tommy Lee fan. I love the short chapters dedicated to each member of Motley Crue.
maybe the best Bio I have read, and I've read a lot. They don't hold back about the drugs and craziness. truly decadent band indulging in the 80's. Makes me love them even more for their honesty. Nikki seems cool, but Mick Mars is the man.
