The sharpener works well. It does take a long time with the coarse stone if you're changing the edge angle. There could be some design improvements but those aren't a deal breaker. The ultimate is a Wicked Edge; that 's about $450 when you add a very stone set to their base model. That makes the Lansky a bargain; it just takes longer. Be sure to strop.

I like the idea of a constant and repeatable honing angle but this silly little contraption does not provide for that. The honing angle changes as a function of the depth of the blade in the clamp, and the clamp offers no aid to achieve repeatability. On top of that, it's an unwieldy and uncomfortable thing to use. I put over an hour (in installments) into straightening/truing the guide rods and honing one quite dull 5.5" kitchen knife to a fair edge, after which my fingers hurt because there's nothing at all ergonomic about this widget even with the "universal mount" sold separately. After the buyer's remorse peaked, I freehand honed a similar, and similarly dull, blade to a keen edge in eight minutes on my trusty old whetstones that don't cause any discomfort at all. I recommend a hard pass on this kludgy "system." The time one might spend mastering this painful doohickey would be much better spent developing the muscle memory required to master plain old whetstones.Read full review

I loved that I could completely re edge a knife. I practiced first with an old knife and brought it to a razors edge. I also bought the metal base and I found it easier with the base. I am a complete amateur and the instructions were clear and had diagrams to help. This is not for the person that wants a quick honing. I liked the precision in the tool. I recommend it for the DIY er that likes to do things themselves.

Very simple to use for many different applications such as small, medium and large knives. Still learning best ways to secure tapered blades. They can be difficult and not really covered in instruction. Will give a nice edge with the proper technique but go slowly at first, you can’t hurry a good job. All in all I’m quite satisfied with this sharpener and looking forward to using the serrated knife stone. This will be another new experience for me!

Follow all of the included instructions for best results. I also bought the 2000 grit saphire and a 70 grit diamond stone. I will say that you need to be REALLY careful when using this especially once the knife gets sharp. You also need to take into consideration just how sharp you really want a knife to be. The wife may not appreciate ALL of her knives being razor sharp (mine didn't). You would be really hard pressed to find a better sharpener for the money. Also ensure that you get a genuine lansky and not one of the cheap chinese knock offs.
