Quiet essential backbone for the family home network

This NAS provides an added storage (+ redundancy) capacity to the two older Seagate NAS drives on my home network. My home network typically supports multiple desktops, laptops, printers, tablets, cell phones, a VoIP phone system, a wireless home security system, game consoles, smart TVs, AppleTVs and Google Chromecasts for a family of 4. With each device generating and consuming media data (photos, videos, cloud data, school homework, youtube etc), the NAS drives are the go-to central backup storage and also function as the media server for streaming via the home network. Setup was a simple follow-the-instructions exercise in connecting the NAS to an available LAN port using the provided ethernet cable.....etc. If needed, there are how-to youtube videos available. This drive is connect to the network via an unmanaged switch already supporting the game consoles and the family room TV . The older NAS are connected to the router located in the home office. It is super quiet. In my case, few would know this NAS is quietly running behind the family room TV. Fast? Just like the overall network speed, it can always be faster (why 4 stars instead of 5). It streams videos to hand-held devices without any problem. PLEX streaming via the ethernet-connected game consoles, appleTVs and smartTVs has never been an issue. Over the network backup is also not an issue since the regular backups are performed in the background at pre-scheduled off-hours. IMHO, the current USB based storage drives still lack the 24-7 connected functionality, (probable knock-on-wood durability) and the connect&forget convenience of the NAS at this time,

Flakey Software and Goes to the Internet for No Reason

The software that goes with the device has not been easy to set-up. It has exhibited strange symptoms that I could not resolve myself, so had to go to the support team. The software/hardware package has the ability for the user to access data from outside the home, but I'm not interested in those features, primarily just data backup. But the software insists on going outside of my local network, onto the Internet, all of the time. The software should not need to get outside of my local network unless I enable features that require it.

  • Workhorse - great for home network backup/sharing/TV streaming

I think this NAS is worth every penny. Old model or not, it gives a solid performance as long as you don't need speed. But I use mine for backups, and streaming TV/movies; for these purposes, it is as fast as I need it to be! I backup all home PCs to it every night, and don't care if its fast or not, it just works! I can purchase and download TV & movies to the device, and as long as it is installed* on the same home network as my Blu-ray player, I have access any time, play-pause-stop-etc. *Installation - I plugged it in and it worked. I recommend it.

  • Works great...but...

I can connect to it easily using Finder on my mac, but the software that came with it doesn't seem to work properly. Upside, I can do my backups and sync directories with it. Downside, haven't been able to remotely connect over the internet.

  • Item works decently.

Cloud storages do not update forever so overall items such as these are a waste of money. They should include a fully functional worldwide FTP access software package (server and client) which should be VERY simple to create for ALL vendors (hitachi, seagate, ibm...).
