This a great little radio. It lacks some of the features of the name brands, like Yaesu or Icom but it doesn't carry the higher price. Its nicely packaged in a sturdy case and has a readable LCD even for old eyes. Great as a spare HT or something to add to your bug out bag. I definitely recommend it and will probably buy another.

this unit is good in many ways , but lousy when it comes to instructions on how to use it , the chinese make some good stuff but are lousy when it comes to programming it and making it work , for this product to be a success you need clear instructions like how to program it , how to make the scanning function work up until now it will sit on the shelf in my house useless until I know how to make it work

Great great great radio This radio is the best I like the feel of it although I did see in the picture that the display is actually different than the one I got but no worries I like it anyway it's a very wonderful radio I want to share a comment. about programming the radio Just go to YouTube look for program Baofeng Radio you'll find what you need there for people who say it's hard to program these radios it's actually easy once you get the hang of it good luck thanks sincerely Bob

A well built budget radio which well exceeds the expectaions for that price range. Get the USB programming cable and use CHIRP to program the channels and life will be easy. To avoid driver problems use CHIRP in linux, it is less sensitive of the cable chipset. Programming directly on the radio is doable but not really a pleasure. Transmit and recieve quality is acceptable with the rubberducky antenna and there are aftermarket antennas that will give it a properly good recieve and trabsmit capability. Avoid counterfeit antennas, waist of money and no improvement or even makes things worse. Battery time is good but dont expect UV-5R battery packs to fit! Overall it is a solid little radio for the price.

The UV-5X is a mediocre radio. While it will get you on nearby repeaters with little difficulty, it’s not going to be your go-to radio if you are looking for greater range (with a good antenna, such as a DBJ-1) nor (especially) simplex. Unfortunate, because I do like the form factor of the UV-5X as it’s a hybrid between the UV-5R and UV-82 series. The receiver with the 5X just isn’t all that great and it’s plagued with intermod issues. I had expectations for the 5X, but conceded that it’s just not going to measure up. I didn’t expect it to measure up to, say, my Yaesu FT-60R, but certainly expected to measure up to at least my better Baofeng/BTech HT’s. All that said, for this price class, you would be much better served by an HT such as the BTech UV-5X3. The 5X3 receives much better than the 5X and also incorporates the 1.25m (220 MHz) band.Read full review

I have several other radios that i am getting rid of due to lack of lithium battery, and replacing with these. Last much longer and are much more light weight.

If you have a UV-5X, so far this is the only UV-5X battery accessory. I'd like to see a fat 2100mAh battery and long 3800mAh battery for the UV-5X. I also have a UV-5X3 and BF-F8HP, but like the UV-5X for several reasons. The UV-5X is a cross between the UV-5R and BF-82(HP) lines. More water resistant and the LED is internal.
