One does not need to know how to play chess to enjoy this movie, but it is fun to note the historical facts as they unfold. The Fischer/Spassky world chess championship match is what got my attention back in the day enough to interest me to play in tournaments. As the years passed, it became clear and evident Fischer was not "well." This movie presents a more insider view of this trait as well as the good Fischer did for the chess community, not only by putting it "on the map", but by insisting on important changes in certain outdated protocol. Basically, the presentation of the two main characters is so well done I forgot I was watching a movie. Everything was spot on and it seemed to fly by-always a sign of a good movie, IMHO.

This is one of the most entertaining psychologically-oriented movies I’ve seen, primarily because of how great Tobey Maguire is at acting as an unpredictable, overly suspicious and controlling, self-centered person whose rants sometimes. The movie uses vintage music and TV news from the Cold War era. I would be interested to learn how it put Tobey Maguire next to the actual footage of Fischer’s Dick Cavett interview so convincingly, having a 1971 Dick Cavett next to a 2014 or 2015 Tobey Maguire talking to each other, with Tobey replacing the real Bobby on the screen. The movie’s original instrumental music is more about capturing a mood than a melody, and thus not very memorable, but it blends in well with everything that’s going on. There are a few uses of clarinet solo which stand out and seemed to me like an appropriate sound quality for Fischer’s mental state. There are some performances which totally steal your attention the whole movie, like Gloria Swanson on Sunset Boulevard or George C. Scott on Patton, and Tobey Maguire in Pawn Sacrifice is in that league.Read full review
