I wasn't sold on Dyson vacuums because they are expensive and look like custodial equipment from an alien star cruiser. However, my old lady wanted one because she had actually used a Dyson at her Mom's house. After that, she wouldn't settle for anything else. When we saw the refurbished models at a big discount on Dyson's eBay store, we got one. Even though it's funny looking, it's a seriously good vacuum cleaner with clever engineering behind it's design. Pro: - Heavy duty power cord and plenty of it. - High quality switches for power and sweeper brush. - Excellent suction power that picks up pet hair and crud better than anything I've ever seen. - Carpet sweeper brush can be turned off to pick up loose dirt on hard floors. - Easily converts from a carpet sweeper to a regular vac. - Extension hose is surprisingly long yet it fits easily inside the vac when not in use. - Articulated steering makes vacuuming fun again. (Wait...what?) - It's mostly all plastic but it's high quality plastic. It won't break easily. - The dirt canister comes off quickly for emptying. - Canister is clear so you can see how full it is at a glance. - HEPA filters keep stirred up dust to a minimum. Good choice for allergenic people. - Lighter than you'd think and easy to carry around using the canister handle. - Not as noisy as most vacs but cats will still run away from it. Dogs will keep a close eye on it because it looks like something that needs barking at. Cons - Getting the Dyson to lock in the upright position takes some getting used to (read the directions). - Canister fills quickly because it picks up so much dirt and crud. - Realizing that, until you got a Dyson, your rugs and carpets were still pretty ratty after you vacuumed. - It's funny looking. (We haven't had it long enough to comment on changing filters.) Verdict: I'm pretty hard to convince but this is one heck of a vacuum cleaner. It won't save you much time at first because you will want to re-do the entire house with it. Time will tell if it holds up as long as an old Hoover.Read full review

I have had 3 Dysons and loved every one but this has been the hardest to use. PROS about the DC50 - lightweight, long cord, great suction, folds down to fit under shelving, even gets under kitchen cabinets. CONS - short hose that doesn't even reach an eight foot ceiling, almost impossible to get the nozzle in and out of its holder without a fight and small canister. I've learned to live with the struggle of getting the hose back into its holder and I empty the canister after every cleaning but nothing I can do about the short hose. I think, since I bought a reconditioned vacuum, it has some glitches that a new one wouldn't so I could probably return for another if I had the time. For now, I'm hoping the snags will work themselves out and I'll use my duster for the ceiling.

I am glad that I bought this vacuum, but it does have an issue that is rather annoying. The hose is just not long enough!! :( And because it is too short, the motor is right on your heels as you clean & the air coming outta that little motor is HOT on one's ankles & feet. It's winter time right now, so it's tolerable, but I don't think I will be using that feature in the summer at all??! I don't know why they don't just make a "hose lengthener attachment" because I see a LOT of complaints about this short hose when I read the reviews. The attachment for pet hair works OK, but I have had better results with the turbo attachment from my old Bissell vacuum. But the ease of use, good suction & compact size does make this a keeper for me in spite of its' drawbacks. I do hope the engineers are listening to make some good improvements in future models!!!Read full review

After using Hoover, Shark, Eureka, etc and Now Dyson...I'm really NOT Impressed :-( First off... I got this for about Half off the retail price (near 200)... So, for the Price, I have kept it just because it is a Dyson. Compared to Shark (1st Gen Lift A Way)... Louder...makes you think it sucks more...but...not so much. -This one has better suction on the sides, Shark has better suction in the center. -This one has a Ball, Shark has a similar feel and actually is smoother. -This one stinks more...maybe it's the HEPA...but you can smell it more than Shark. -I don't like the extension setup...Sharks setup is MUCH Better...Much easier!!! -Small Head...Great for difficult areas, but takes longer to vacuum. Bottom line...I'm nowhere near impressed...coming from Shark. It's a very good vacuum, but so is Shark (at half the regular retail price). Now...Both of these vacuums... compared to my last Hoover... -Definitely more Suction (Side or Center) -Lighter -No Rewind Option...(Hoover...Maybe that's the future...)Read full review

This purchased replaced an older, larger dyson. With the ball, this one move easier and is easy to handle. It has as much or more power than the larger one but the larger one was about 8 years old which may explain the decreased power. The dust bin is much smaller so I have to empty it more often. I like the tools. When I start the machine, I have to lift it at times to get the brush to revolve. Once it starts revolving, it is super powerful and works great. I'm happy with my purchase.
