  • Great book about a model railroading pioneer and his modeling

An in depth look at one of the most influential model railroaders and his 3 layouts. Many photos, track plans, and excerpts from letters & articles by and about John Allen. John Allen started modeling when there was almost no HO scale ready to run available. The level of detail was far above most other HO layouts and equipment of that era, and still compares favorably with the best of today's layouts. And for those interested in operation, there is a lot of information about that, as John designed the layout with operation in mind, not just to show off his fantastic models. The author was involved with (and eventually editor of) Model Railroader magazine from its beginning and knew John and other pioneer modelers personally, giving him access to information that few would have. It was written when many of them were still alive, so he could interview them.
