Desert Racing in Arizona, you face the finest dust there is. Our military tests here because if it beats the dust from Arizona silt, it'll beat anything. When I was racing, I tried a lot of different stuff, including the oiled gauze air filters.
After my first race with it, when going through the bike to prep for the next race, I found a very light, very fine coating of dust inside my inlet track. I switched back to twin-air oiled foam, and never found any dust in the inlet track again.
You need a good air-box; gauze will stop water intrusion (up to a point). The oiled foam doesn't stop water at all, and the water can carry dirt from the filter Through the filter into the inlet track and thus into the motor.
I use a twin-air filter, notoil oil and cleaner, and have a solid, working air box on my bike.
