The finest dust cannot pass
Desert Racing in Arizona, you face the finest dust there is. Our military tests here because if it beats the dust from Arizona silt, it'll beat anything. When I was racing, I tried a lot of different stuff, including the oiled gauze air filters. After my first race with it, when going through the bike to prep for the next race, I found a very light, very fine coating of dust inside my inlet track. I switched back to twin-air oiled foam, and never found any dust in the inlet track again. You need a good air-box; gauze will stop water intrusion (up to a point). The oiled foam doesn't stop water at all, and the water can carry dirt from the filter Through the filter into the inlet track and thus into the motor. I use a twin-air filter, notoil oil and cleaner, and have a solid, working air box on my bike.
