This is one of the last masterpieces created by the late Satoshi Kon, and in my personal opinion, probably the best movie he ever directed. I firt viewed this movie in fairly low quality on Youtube, but even with the reduced imagery, this movie and its story still stuck to me and to this day haven't let go. This movie is very surreal and has a rapid, never-ending flow to it that will leave you in suspence as to what will happen next. It's impossible to explain much of the plot without giving away too many of the climatic twists, but the film centers around the theft of a revolutionary device that allows a group of scientists and doctors to look into the minds of mental patients. After the device is taken, people start to have their minds and dreams assaulted by a malignant force, and its up to the device's users and creator to find out who is responsible. The characters in this movie are very endearing and are all relatable to in some way; Kon's characters are all dynamic and play different roles in the story, and the English dubbed voice actors are very skilled at keeping in character with the person they were assigned. The level of animation in this film is just staggering; the colors and different scenes that Kon contrived are just breath-taking and don't relent throughout the entire picture. Anyone who is a fan of Miyazaki's stunning animated classics will not be disappointed with this movie as well; their animation is just about on par to the other's, with some obvious style differences. The only draw back on this animation classic is that it NOT meant for children; here in the United States, it carries a very justified R rating that is not to be taken lightly. Kon is very known for having raw themes and occurances in his movies and series, and this movie has several things meant only for adults, including several occurances of nudity, obvious homosexuality, a scene in which there is attempted rape, and so forth. I know it's a blunt description, but I just want people to be realistic about this movie. Just because it is animated doesn't mean it's free of adult themes. None of these things are on screen for long periods of time; they occur interspersed throughout the whole movie, and their occurances do have some relevance to plot, so their presence shouldn't turn people away. Compared to some of Kon's other works, this one is fairly tame when it comes to adults themes. That aside, this movie is worth adding to any anime collection. If you're looking for a movie that's both fun and also dead-serious, and has stunning animation and interesting characters, then this is the movie for you. Admittedly the dream-like atmosphere of it takes a little getting used to, but once you delve headlong into this movie, you'll find yourself feeling like you've entered the surreal plane of it yourself. So if you're feeling bold and want to try watching something new, this is defintely the film for you.Read full review
This is my personal type of anime: Intriguing, complex, requires multiple viewings to get to know it and even revisiting the anime down the road will allow you to catch subtle nuances you didn't catch the first 3 times you watched it. It's Rated R for violent and sexual images but I think that's a bit on the conservative side, but that's protectionism for ya I guess. Now if this was Ninja Scrolls I'd certainly consider it an appropriate rating. Also a bonus is the fact that unlike most anime where the story line includes a decent bit of "chibi" such as over reactions between characters right in the middle of a serious situation, this movie fuses the desire to take a break from the seriousness of the anime with the story itself. I'll take this fusion of chibi into a story any day over the kind that is in stark contrast to and detracts from the story line where you're sitting there waiting for the characters to quit arguing or whining about insignificant events or thoughts. If you are into the goofy bonks on the head type chibi anime then this anime may be more of a 2 or 3 star for you. In my opinion this anime is a 5 star anime and with the ability to find something new every time I think it more than pays for itself.Read full review
WOW supercool intriguing plot with awesome like future tech ideas. If you like Akira or The girl who lept thru time then this is a great anime if you dont like those this was still a great anime. The artistic directing and flow of the film was awesome and the included art commentary and production videos allowed viewers to get into the process of making the anime film. I learned ideas about how to color and light the scene this was used for the effect of making dream-like sequences whereas somber tones would contrast this to set the mood. Also my favorite part was a symbolic illusion of alternate timelines and worlds colliding as if raindroplets had merged together. If the art wasn't superb enough for a standalone feature the music soundtrack paired better than steak and wine. The sounds blow your mind like digital psycho-therapeutic HiP-Hop-pnotizingly groovalious. I hadnt watched cooler music videos than Gorrilaz and Wavetwisters and Paprika is now my favorite anime I think I can watch it several more times and see new things I never saw before. Paprika is a beautiful movie that not many anime can accomplish even to this day. Filled with colorful animation and solid storytelling, this is one that even a person that's more interested in other types of animation can enjoy. As for the DVD itself, it came in great condition and runs with no problems at all.

I really like this movie, dreams coming to life with devastating results. Those who think this is a rip off of "Inception" should know that this movie came out 4 years before. Paprika is a compelling watch, highly recommended.
