  • Great drive, but just be warned about the 3.3v issue. (8TB White Label)

Just a short review here. I just wanted to make people aware the this drive doesn't work when it's supplied with 3.3v. You can use a Molex to SATA adapter, clip the 3.3v wire, or some have put thin tape over those pins. This 8TB drive ended with EZAZ (WD80EZAZ). These are the drives to be aware of. I knew this when I bought it for an internal drive in my PC, and it just wasn't an issue since it's easy to deal with, but just look it up before you buy it. The drive is great though. I was getting a bit over 200 GB/s when it was encrypted, so it's quite good performance-wise. By the way, if you're using this in external enclosure or NAS, the 3.3v issue is nothing you'll be dealing with and can just use it as-is.

  • Nice drives. Overcame the 3.3v problem on a Drobo.

When I received the drives I tested them on a USB SATA cradle and they were both good, but when installed in my Drobo 4-bay Gen2 (like https://www.ebay.com/itm/Drobo-Gen-2-DR04DD10-4-Bay-Storage-Array-USB-2-0-FireWire-800/174095633172?hash=item2888e88b14:g:b04AAOSwqK1dzOBz) they weren't recognized. Fortunately I noticed someone writing about the 3.3v problem so I did a search and found several descriptions of what was happening. Unfortunately I can't link to them because of e-Bay rules, but you can go search "WD80EMAZ 3.3v" and they will come up. The Drobo has slide-in drive bays with the connectors mounted to the backplane so a spliced power cable wasn't going to work. In the end, my solution involved fingernail polish. Also to note: If you are putting them in a older Drobo, it takes a Loooong time to rebuild the volume set on drive this size, as in the order of 4-5 days, and you can replace only one drive a t a time. Otherwise, I'm good to go.

  • Needs power

If you have trouble powering these drives up in a pc or server. Use a 4pin to sata power adapter to supply enough power to spin them up.
