Industrial shunter or rack & pinion engine? This is both in one!
"Carl" is a privatised German State Railways (DB) class 89 (BR89) with a twist; Fleischmann (GFN) modified their normal chassis to create a steam engine for their rack railway system. Various mid-size BR89 shunters of the DB ended up with industrial enterprises (mostly coal mines), so GFN killed 2 birds with onw stone: produce an accurate model of a private owner shunter, and produce a steam engine (not prototypical) for their rack railway, which until then had to content with an electric engine only (a privatised DB class E69; not prototypical, but similar to the engines of the Zugspitzbahn).
A product of the early 1970s, the model was in its days top of the range in detailing, and still today compares well with other, more recent models. But there's plenty of room for improvement, and BR89 can be had from other manufacturers with finer detailing today. The mechanics are GFN's strong point, and this engine is no exception: very sturdy, very dependable and good maintainability make this machine a joy to operate; and suitable for children. This applies in particular to the rack and pinion system, where even today GFN;s rack railway is still the only system on the market that is sturdy and reliable enough to be used in automated. unsupervised operation. Note that it is compatible with the Heinzl rack railway vehicles.
