Madden Football has always been known as the pioneer of football games. Madden NFL 98 is as real as it gets to actually being a part of the NFL. Madden NFL 98 includes all licensed NFL teams and even has historical teams like the 1983 Raiders and 1985 Bears, and not to mention the All-Madden teams. It has all the NFL stadiums, the most current rosters, and every stat possible. The game modes include, Exhibition, Season, Custom Season, Tournament, Fantasy Draft, and Front Office. As for sound, 98 offers an interactive crowd plus the real voices of Pat Summeral and John Madden's crazy quotes called Maddenisms. The best part of all is the realistic gameplay and motion of the players. Virtually every move is possible. From spins to stiff arms. It's all there!

Great game from a simpler time
Remember the 1990's? Gasoline hovered around a dollar a gallon, the country was just beginning its love affair with high tech, and on Sundays in the fall, we loved our football! Madden 1998 is one of the best original Playstation titles from that era. Compared to what is available today it seems fairly quaint. The game play is mostly viewed from an end zone zoom camera, with boxy graphics from the period. Yet, Madden 1998 rocks for several reasons. To play this game, a knowledge of football helps greatly. After that prerequisite, it is easy to learn. You always have a choice of calling the play and watching the players do their thing, or taking control of the quarterback, halfbacks or defensive players and sending them into the fight. The realistic coin toss is a great touch, along with the NFL Today style commentary at the beginning of each game. Great care was made in correctly programming the teams and players, as the teams' strengths and weaknesses showed through. My favorite NFL team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had trouble scoring and let the poor quarterback, Trent Dilfer, get sacked too much. And Denver's play scheme features lots of passes. The stadiums, grass, and crowd noises are all very realistic and add greatly to the enjoyment. After playing several different games I only noticed one error: they made Boomer Esiason, who was a backup for the Bengals that year, a right hand quarterback when he is left handed. For the last few years, each new edition of the Madden franchise has stepped forward in some areas, but stepped back in others. Football fans will be happy to know that Madden NFL 98 has finally broken the trend by containing nothing but improvements across the board. The biggest improvements in Madden 98 are its gameplay and AI. EA spent more of Madden's development cycle than ever on its AI. The results are obvious: This Madden is by far the smartest of the series - and of any football game ever made. The days of running up the score with your eyes closed are now over, as the computer defense now accurately reacts to offensive plays. If you pick the correct defense, you'll be in a position to make the play (assuming your players are not outclassed). Although the offensive AI could use more work, Madden 98 best represents the chess game behind the high-paid muscle on the field. Beginners need not be scared by this realism, as Madden offers plenty of difficulty levels to ease any player into the game. Madden 98's NFL atmosphere is outstanding. Pat Summerall's signature play-by-play and Madden's blustery comments are a given, but it's the extra things that set it apart from the rest of the field. For example, each stadium is identical to its real-life counterpart, right down to the sandy remnants of baseball diamonds found during early season NFL games. Suspense is felt as the "chain gang" measures for a first down (Summerall: "It's gonna be close"), sometimes followed by relief as former NFL referee Red Cashan points and proclaims "First down!" in his southern drawl. Like last year's game, Madden uses 2D player sprites in 3D stadium environments. Although some might scoff at Madden 98 not using polygons like its chief competitor GameDay 98, these player sprites are well animated and detailed. Each player has his real number on the back of his jersey, and his figure is given depth by shading and pseudo light sourcing. If the field turns into a mud bowl because of rain, the players suffer by having dirty, brown jerseys. These well-drawn players also move realistically during gameplay. One-handed grabs, goal-line dives, and players crumbling when hit are well dramatized on the field. And speaking of drama, Madden fans will be glad that the ambulance is back. Madden 98 presents a total package of features and options. You can create a custom schedule for a team during the season mode, and oodles of statistics will satisfy the most anal of football statisticians. "Player of the Game" awards are given out shortly before the game finishes, and "Player of the Week" accolades are chosen at the conclusion of every season week. At the end of each season, Pro Bowl players are announced, then placed into the Pro Bowl game (which follows the Super Bowl). Although it doesn't have flashy 3D graphics, Madden 98 is still the most realistic and complete football game on the market. It's good
I am a fan of old school games and I love my Playstation. And what better of a game to add than this one! It's TONS of fun and yet challenging at the same time, would definantly reccomend!

Madden 98 is one football game that I loved to play. Memories of blown out eams 200 to nothing. Excellent running plays and very long throws playing with great players from the past.

son likes game--yeah! Game is a good break from the newer Madden gamess--son is collecting all Madden games since year of his birth--this game seams to be amoung his favorites.
